Tandjer was a military General whom Nigeria under Abacha supported into power via a coup. Tandjer replaced the IBB friendly junta . Abacha was not only uninstalling Emirs and the Sultan that were friendly to IBB but also the government in Niger that was friendly to IBB.

Tandjer will later do a similar civilian transition and after his two term limit in 2010 wanted to do a tenure extension. Nigeria kicked him out and had a junta that replaced him and later ushered in civil democratic rule.

The junta in Niger are rightly scared of Nigeria knowing how Nigeria has been intervening in their leadership tussles.
