Olu Omo Of Ogun,Gbenga Daniel, On"Hunger Strike" To Protest Detention Conditions

By SaharaReporters, New York

Mr. Justin Olugbenga Daniel, the former Governor of Ogun State who was taken into custody in Abuja by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) five days ago, has gone on hunger strike, his lawyers claimed.

A statement issued today by Yemi Oke, counsel to Mr. Daniel, said the former governor was being detained at the EFCC facility “under unbearable conditions” and subjected to “gruesome interrogations” by operatives of the commission.

“Under normal circumstances, Otunba Daniel should have been arraigned in court since he has spent more than the required period specified by law in detention,” the statement said.  “But at the time of issuing this statement, he has not been arraigned in court and no charge has been preferred against him. Yet he is being detained and his fundamental human rights curtailed for no just cause. Only his wife is allowed access to him.”

Mr. Daniel’s lawyers, the statement said, this morning served the EFCC with court processes seeking to enforce the detainee’s fundamental human rights, but that has been ignored by the agency.  As a result of the ‘worsening’ condition under which he is being held, as well as the curtailment of his fundamental rights, the former governor has now declined food and medication.

“It is noteworthy to point out that one of Otunba Daniel’s interrogators, in an unguarded moment, blurted out that the case against him would not have gotten to this level if he had begged a former president of the country whom he said was behind Otunba Daniel’s travails,” the statement said.  “We therefore call on all men and women of goodwill to prevail on the EFCC to allow the rule of law to prevail by either releasing the former governor or charge him to court. These are the only two options known to law.”

The former governor and former President Olusegun Obasanjo had a major public disagreement within the People’s Democratic Party ahead of the April 2011 elections, and Obasanjo is known to be one of the signatories of the EFCC petition against Mr. Daniel.

I will not be surprised if the hunger strike was the instruction given to him by his black magic consultant. This dude is always desperate with style, he will do anything to get over or to steal money.

Black Magic Consultant: "Hunger strike for 3 days and everybody will forget your crime"

given the current travails of the NationNewspapers, this should hardly be surprising

Hunger strike?that's the unlawfully detained man's last resort to attract public attention and support to be freed.OGD should tell us the basis for his wanting to starve himself to death. As far as we are concerned he has questions to answer and until he has satisfactorily convinced the EFCC that he is innocent contrary to all charges against him he will continue to be in custody.so he had better saved himself all the strength he needs to answer for his defense, unless he wants to commit suicide prior to his sentencing.

This lawyers will never talk about them, now that they have filled their accounts with  mr. gbenga's 'stolen' money, they know what being "detained beyound 48 hours" mean. Rubish! make him no eat nau, how e take change price of gari 4 market?
Re: Gbenga Daniel On Hunger Strike In EFCC Custody - Sahara Reporters by flammen(m): 2:29pm On Oct 12, 2011
Gbenga Daniel was a disgrace to the youths of this nation, to the Egba indigenes; even though most of them are yet to realise.
8 years of hope for development, ended up looting and selling the assets of the state to himself.
None the less, his trial shouldn't be delayed, if they really have something on him.

Gbenga is only unlucky to have hit an Iroko tree.  The other govs have since appeared in court and like the usual thing, after all the noise and whateva, they will walk the streets free again, enjoying their loots.  I dont take efcc serious.  How many ex-govs previously indicted are in prison today?  Have u guys forgotten so soon? Na today?

He should keep it up; very nice of him. At least, he should 've a feel of what his actions and inaction brought on several others.
