Would you sign an Offer Letter with an Acceptance deadline of 24 hours?

Typically when organization sends an Offer, they expect you to sign within a stipulated deadline so they can plan for your resumption.

However, some organizations insist on putting undue pressure on candidates to quickly accept without allowing them time to thoroughly review the terms and conditions.

Beware of any Offer that has a stipulated acceptance deadline of 24 or 36 hours.

They rush you to accept such when there are certain “ fuzzy” terms or conditions.

It is unprofessional to coerce, cajole or harass candidates to accept an Offer within 24 hours.

Any organization that wants you to accept an Offer within 36/48 hours has simply not done their their homework well.

Why didn’t they start the interview process earlier to prevent the rush to sign or xxxx

Don’t be like the candidate below.

Day 1- Mr A resumed 2 weeks ago and was excited, onboarding process on- going and looking forward to working there.

Day 4 - He was at work and got called that wife had a serious medical emergency so took permission to take off and visit the hospital.

Day 5 - Got to work and went to meet designated Executive about the company’s HMO initiative.

Executive - Oh, you can’t be on the HMO until after your probationary period ends.

Mr A - This can’t be true. Why? Most organizations allow employee to be on HMO from day one.

Executive - Apologies, this is our company’s policy and we cannot change it because of you. We did this before but most employees when they leave the organization, the HMO premium paid would be a waste.
(Some HMOs now have replacement clause that you can insist to be included during your negotiation).

Mr A: I am surprised.

Executive - This is the truth, kindly check your Offer Letter.

Mr A - (He checked his email on the phone and confirmed that the clause was “HMO after Confirmation”. Why did I leave my former organization with an HMO for this?

He never planned on spending his earnings for any medical treatment for his family.

This is a benefit he had enjoyed for over 6 years. How would he cope now?

Reality dawned on him, he was quick to accept the Offer without taking his time to Review and Understand the terms.

Dear candidates, please take your time to thoroughly review any Offer.

Don’t let any organization or Hiring Managers coerce, harass and cajole you to sign an Offer within 24 hours.

What do you think happened afterwards?

There are instances where an organisation may be under pressure to fill up a position within a very tight deadline.

In such an instance giving a potential candidate just 24 hours to make up his mind may not be out of place

In Nigeria today - Yes !!!
In seems they made a mistake and want to copt out . A respectable coy would give 72hrs to review and get back to them .
I would accept and if working conditions not acceptable resign later. Why would I give myself 0 chance by not signing the letter ?

So you mean 48 hours is not long enough to review your offer letter?

You can make a decision within 12 hours if you are serious minded.

Yes.

All you need is to be smart to understand the pros and cons of its contents.

Also, quickly ask people to help explain some terms to you. Possibly, you can ask the employer too to explain some terms to you.

But if the employer is unwilling to do so within the time, then know that you don't belong there
