Yeah, that's why Governor Dapo Abiodun went there to see how it's operating. An Indian company has started installing electric motors in motorcycles in Ogun State. Dapo Abiodun was invited to Benin Republic for their anniversary and the company invited him to check out their operation there.

Cool. Glad to hear this.

Did you read the article. People rent batteries. Charging off batteries will definitely be another line of business.

20 years ago do you ever imagine that charging phone batteries for N100 can be a viable business.

Think solution and you will make money

China dominates lithium production, depending on how much quantity of lithium has, most times it will make economic sense for it be processed in China....

This is really nice, with this electric bike, f*ck fuel.
An innovation like this might not really translate to a significant or notable cost of transportation in Nigeria as our country can't boast of stable electricity supply yet o, those companies will still have to look for another source of energy if they want to operate in Nigeria.

Bro there's solar so it's possible that it will work and besides it's not everywhere in Nigeria that dosen't have electricity. also Lagos government introduced electric bus few months ago, so this one is nothing.
Re: Kenya's Electric Okada (Boda Boda) by naptu2: 5:24am On Aug 18, 2023
As I wrote on the electric BRT thread, it's not only about using solar power. There's also regenerative braking. The batteries are charged whenever you press the brakes.

You create energy whenever you brake. This energy is usually lost as heat. But in the electric vehicles, it is converted to electricity and used to charge the batteries. This gives the batteries a longer range.

All these are already being applied in Nigeria.

Ignore people that say that it cannot work in Nigeria. They have no clue what they are talking about. Not only is there electric BRT in Lagos and not only is Mustapha Gajibo running electric bus services in Maiduguri and Lagos, but delivery companies are already using electric motorcycles for their business.

In fact, you can see in one of the articles that I posted on the first page that Max (Max Okada) is actually assembling electric motorcycles in Nigeria. These motorcycles are being used in its delivery business.

Those who say it can't be done in Nigeria are either trolls or they have no clue what they're talking about.

After two years of development, MAX deploys its electric motorbikes in Nigeria

By Abubakar Idris
Aug 11, 2020

Nigerian mobility company, MAX has finally launched its electric motorcycles for the Nigerian market. Called MAX E Series, the new vehicles have been under development for the last two years. After a pilot phase, the company has now launched the new vehicles in the Gbamu Gbamu community of Ogun State in South Western Nigeria.

MAX first announced its electric mobility plans in June 2019 and by November 2019, it revealed the actual design and concept of the vehicle, calling it the MAX E Series M1. Now, the newly deployed EV is the MAX E series M2, a faster more performance-enhanced model.

“We’ve been on a product development journey at MAX over the last five years looking at how we could transform mobility across market segments, across vehicle configurations, and we looked at how we could leapfrog combustion engines to electric-powered mobility,” Adetayo Bamiduro, MAX’s CEO and co-founder, told TechCabal.

“The new announcement is a milestone in terms of our journey to leading and pioneering that transformation,” he added.

Founded in 2015, Metro Africa Express (MAX) is the pioneer of bike hailing in Nigeria with inspiration from South Asia’s Grab and Go-Jek. The company started out as a motorcycle-based logistics service before adding passenger transportation by 2017. Since then, it gained traction in Lagos and later expanded to a few other cities across the country.

By June 2019, it raised a total of $7 million funding through equity and grants to scale its mobility solutions. Bertrand Njoya, MAX’s Chief Financial Officer, told TechCrunch the company was working with different partners to roll out electric vehicles into the Nigerian market.

With the recent launch and deployment of the MAX E series, the company wants to mass-produce these vehicles and is “targeting thousands over the next 12-18 months.”

While the company said this is the “first indigenously developed electric motorcycle,” it is working with Asian and European partners including Japan’s Yamaha and Breakthrough Energy Ventures.

The company explained to TechCabal that the MAX E Series has a battery cycle of 1,500 and could run as fast as 60km per hour. The new E Series M2 on the other hand is much faster, hitting a speed of 85km per hour with a battery warranty of over 2,000 cycles. On average, charging time for the M2 is four hours. The new EVs will cost around $1,500, similar to the price range of other electric vehicles manufacturers.

MAX said it has signed partnerships with different groups including distributors, energy companies and real estates to deploy battery swapping stations for electric vehicles. This would improve access and deliver an experience that is comparable or superior to petrol/gas stations.”

“We’re excited about the role we’re playing in deploying these vehicles and making them accessible both in rural and urban contexts as well,” Bamiduro told TechCabal in an interview.

By 2030, the company estimates that there will be 100 million units of motorcycles in Africa. By rolling out electric vehicles now, MAX says it wants to play “a very critical role in reducing carbon emissions and mitigating the negative impact of combustion engines on our environment.”

MAX’s commitment to electric vehicles is an interesting one, more so because Nigeria has been lax around ecological issues and concerns about the environment. Is there a market for electric vehicles in Nigeria and are there Nigerian consumers who can afford EVs which tend to be more expensive than petrol-powered alternatives?

Bamiduro says, yes.

“There is strong demand than people realise,” he added. “Africans are very early adopters of innovative technology, [so] it’s not a question of desire or interest from our people, it’s a question of access; a question of whether someone can bring it to them,” he explains to TechCabal.

“From all the research, interviews and pilots we’ve done, there is no question about it. There is a massive demand for electric mobility. The question is who would provide the infrastructure to meet that demand.”

MAX believes it can solve this access problem and is targeting different customers including private individuals, commercial motorcycle operators and other institutions including the government.

To bridge the access gap, MAX is adopting an innovative financing model. This would reduce the upfront cost of acquiring the new electric vehicles.

QORE by Sterling Bank has brought Mustapha Gajibo's Kaande to Lagos.

Mustapha Gajibo started out by installing electric motors on minibuses (korope) and thereby converting them to electric vehicles. He has a large solar farm that powers his charging stations. He rents out buses to drivers in Maiduguri and they run commercial bus services in the city. Drivers and passengers prefer the electric buses because they are cheaper, quieter and as one passenger said, the drivers don't waste their time by queuing at petrol stations.

He also revealed (in a Deutchewelle interview some years ago) that he is building his own electric vehicle, the Kaande. He has now completed a few units of the Kaande.

Sterling Bank hired Mustapha Gajibo to build a solar-powered charging station on Victoria Island. They have now helped him to bring some units of the Kaande to Lagos.

Watch the video.

Tell that to yourself..
The same way our cocoa gets exported n in return we buy chocolates expensively....
So it's also not feasible to have other manufacturing plants here aside nestle n Cadbury yet we eat imported chocolates....
Having a lithium battery manufacturing company is feasible.... if we are really ready for growth n development in Africa.

You think setting up a manufacturing is solely based on raw materials, is anybody stopping ghana and co from doing the needful to set up chocolate factory? But do u have the technology to do so and still make profits? Do u have access to other raw materials needed for production? Is a whole lot of things needed to factor in production ,
U want to build lithium plant....
Do u have the technology to refine and process lithium, do u know there other raw materials needed for processing of lithium and manufacturing of the battery....do u have access to them? Can u set up the plant and still be profitable?
We live in globalized world now where there is division of labor... sometimes it is more profitable to extract raw materials and send it abroad for processing because it would not make economic sense to manufacture in your house ...
Times have changed, no let propaganda brainwash you ....

When I read ur response.... I laugh cos u kept on saying "do u know".
Now let me reply..
Do u know UAC foods have been operating in Nigeria for years?
Do u know how they doing it
Do u GSK and Nestlé have been operating for years too??
So pls stop saying Do u know whats needed or required??
Any supposed company needing to invest in Africa knows what's needed
So please stop been shortsighted..
If a company really wants to set up the process of refining lithium and as well as making the batteries, they'd do without hesitation...
After man power is cheap in Nigeria..
We all know the minimum wage..
So stop saying "Do u know" again.
Did u even know or think a Nigerian could decide to build a refinery here in Nigeria?

Like i said, there are factors to consider before a private capital is directed towards manufacturing...
U can cheap man power but do u have skilled man power?
Depending on the sector, some materials do not make sense to be manufactured in their host country, except the state will own the company and will put profits aside and focus on national interest...
This is the nature of the world today.... having raw materials does not automatically translate to wealth, if u want it to translate to wealth, u must have a skilled work force, you must build up other relevant supply chains, ease of doing business and co...
For a company to setup lithium processing in Nigeria, they must have weighed that is profitable to do so ...in some cases for other raw materials, it may not be profitable to do so on the long run...
And you must know that most of this solid minerals are part of a bigger supply chain needed in manufacturing a product...
