There's no functional refinery in Nigeria...
What's stopping the government from establishing one?

Troops pollute the land, water and air with their colleagues who they had disagreement with after they had disagreement with payment percentage for their loot.

Now the people that farm on this land and fish from the water around will suffer from health issues and die young from the contamination of their farm produce and fish from the water around.

Something that even a 10 years old can do without any formal education.
The honest truth is that it's even these illegal refineries that make fuel more available. A lot of fuel stations buy fuel from them so I wonder why gov't will keep destroying them instead of regulating their activities.

Honestly, something is fundamentally wrong with this country. If these guys can refine crude oil in such a crude way, why has government been throwing billions of naira on our refineries that haven't produced a cup of PMS in ages?

Why not bring the culprits to book and convert the refinery to government use?
Since they refine fuel of nice and high quality octane value, why not convert it to government property?
Even if the standards fall short, why can't it be upgraded?

we have being saying these over and over but i don"t just under people in government

Instead of burning the refineries why not simply annex these local refineries, brush them up and regularte there activities, the journey of thousand mile will start from a step

Even the act of security agents burning vessels carrying smuggled oil sounds absurd, Nigeria is in no position to condole waste, these things can be put into use

We are not productive yet we are so wasteful, i feel our leaders deliberately do things to keep the nation on retrogression,

Nigerians are suffering and wailing due to absence of a working refinery leading to rising fuel cost, while some fools in uniform are destroying a working refinery.

Because it is a bad idea.

Fuel refined in them illegal refineries is not good for your car's engine. Infact, it is a nice way to wreck your car's engine...slowly.

(Yes, the fuel in the refinereis may be of better quality than the fuel from Europe that we import. But the fuel from Europe are refined in bad substandard refineries kept open for our use....in order to keep costs of petrol low. And both are, in the long run, bad for the engine of our cars.

Better we get our legal refineries running .).

No one seems to be talking about them refineries no more. The best we hear are what seems like the normal political propaganda or outright pretense.

Ah, they even said their plan is to inject the supposed subsidy funds into other parts of the economy... Oh, maybe rifining our our crude has nothing to do with the economy. Smart people indeed .. smh

The reason why universities cannot and should not go into oil refining is the same reason why TOYOTA as a car manufacturer does not produce tires.

Where do you think they get the crude from? Through bunkery. Simply put, those guys are cooking crude, not the regular posh refinary you hear about.

All book without experience is no profit, i still think, there is something about that idea that makes a difference. I could be wrong as you say, but why not, try it on the existing refineries in Warri, port Harcourt and Kaduna. smiley

Illegal Refinery can refine crude oil into finished products..BUT the almighty Kaduna, Porthacourt and Warri refineries cannot..... wonders in Nigeria

Let's just demolish those 4 refineries and allow these illegal, low-budget ones to serve the nation

They won’t do it because they stand to gain nothing all these politicians it’s their personal achievements they have in mind and we Nigerians don’t pay attention to details, Independent marketers said if government empowers these local refineries fuel can be sold as cheap as 80 pm

If these people cam build local refinery, assemble them and build a standard refinery, it must not be very large

Good idea boss and I perfectly understand you. In other for you to upgrade it, that land must be cleansed. Too bad for our country, when it comes to environmental protection, we have lost it.

The soil needs to be unearth at least 4ft and disposed in a landfill purposely for industrial waste, oil and chemicals.

The production process needs to be in a contained space to control any form of oil spillage.

Illegal dumping of waste materials such as Sulphur, solvents, slop etc into the land should not be tolerated..

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.

Standardizing fabricated equipment. I understand we as Africans like to do "German German" or african engineering or african creativity type of work but we need to also think beyond that old school african engineering mentality and consult those indigenes who did engineering in school to see how best they can make those equipment standard to avoid accidents.

In summary, those men in the local refinery can do this. It is not hard. We just need to think well for ourselves and despite our african engineering technique, the govt can allow them continue their operation as long as they maintain the standard I wrote ontop. And ofcourse not steal oil.

After all, the kerosene we use at home, 90% comes from those local refinery.

It is possible if we put our mind and soul to it.

1. What you call refineries are just "makeshift boilers" constructed to distill kpofire aka low quality diesel, kerosene and petrol.

2. Crude oil is stolen from compromised pipelines. This is the only motivation for the illegal business. Take away the awoof stock and they will all abandon the hazardous activity.

Destruction is the only option.
