Again, Fashola Commissions 72 Units Elegant Court …pics

Oct 13, 2011 -

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Thursday commissioned 72 units of three bedroom flats at Elegant Court located in Ikota in Lekki area, stating that the State will continue to partner with the private sector to develop similar accommodation for middle precipitate upper income strata and use the proceeds to fund its social housing provision.

Governor Fashola who spoke during the commissioning at the premises of Elegant Court, Ikota said during the campaigns for the last election, many opponents criticized the State Government for partnering to invest in luxury apartments, stressing that they were only exhibiting their ignorance.

"What they fail to realize is that if we don't invest in these types of houses and take the money to go and fund social housing, we will not find enough money to do it. We are the only creative government that can create such novel programme".

"Over the next few weeks, months and years, in fulfillment of our electoral promises, Lagosians should expect to see the commencement and completion of many more of these types of housing projects funded directly by Government and also in partnership with the private sector.

"For our government in Lagos, and our party , the Action Congress of Nigeria, housing delivery remains one of the time tested policies for creating growth, economic development, galvanizing employment and reducing crime", the Governor stated.

Governor Fashola recalled that a little over 16 days ago when he commissioned the 80 units of three bedroom flats in Ojokoro, he stated that the solution to the Lagos housing deficit did not lie with the State Government alone but will require a broad based coming together of all stakeholders, from the State to the Federal and to the private sector.

He stated that the State Government has been working diligently to create a platform for such collaboration.

"We have come this far because of our clear understanding that there are entrepreneurs in our society who have what we want and that we also have what they want. They want to do legitimate business by building houses to be sold to the middle and upper income strata of our society where there is a clear market demand. We have the land that we hold in trust for the people".

"We have thus engaged them to create a partnership where they offered to take credit from banks to finance construction and we offered to provide land and share the profits from the sale of the houses to be built", the Governor explained.

The Governor reiterated that the 72 units of bedroom flats which is built on 1.9 hectares of land represent one of the visible results of that partnership while among the invisible benefits are the profits made by the financing bank, Skye Bank who saw the opportunity for business and lent a hand to it.

He added that with the business partnership, Skye Bank is earning income for its shareholders and also keeping its employers at work when other banks are laying off staff.

Governor Fashola explained that part of the benefit of the project could also be deduced from operations of the State Government partners on the project, Messrs Cortex Limited who have successfully kept its 25 employees at work and paying their salaries.

He reiterated that for the 30 months that the construction lasted on the project, about 1500 men and women were engaged on the site and several vendors who sold food, water and many other things as well as the sub contractors who supplied building materials all earned a living to put food on the family table and take care of their dependants.

He added that the Ikota housing scheme is another Private Public Partnership (PPP) success of the government that is helping it to achieve its policy thrust of eradicating poverty and sustainable economic growth through infrastructure renewal and development.

Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Housing, Mr Bosun Jeje said the Ministry of Housing has developed a template for appraising interested private developers as well as facilitating necessary sign-off from the relevant Ministries and government agencies on behalf of the developers.

Mr Jeje added that it is worthy of note that the Public Private Partnership is already yielding fruits as some of the partners have completed their projects while some have reached advance stages of work.

He also commended the developer for not just delivering houses for the upper- medium end of the market but for deeming it fit to also provide communal amenities on the estate which will no doubt go beyond shelter but a service that is world class in delivery.

In an address, the Managing director of Cortex Limited, Mr Olufemi Odunaiya commended the Governor for graciously granting the approval for the implementation of the housing scheme.

He added that the concept within the scheme is for residents to live life to the fullest as emphasis has been placed on having a healthy and safe environment, comfortable apartment, good sports and fitness facilities as well as independence.

Also speaking, the Managing Director of Skye Bank Plc, Mr Kehinde Durosinmi–Etti who was represented by Mr Tajudeen Abdulsalam saluted the State Government for providing the appropriate policy thrust toward addressing the housing needs of the people of the State.

He gave a commitment that the bank will continue to support the State Government in the field of housing towards improving the quality of life of every Lagosian.

Prominent among those who attended the event were members of the State Executive Council, the Elegushi of Ikateland, Oba Saheed Elegushi, the lawmaker representing the area, Mr Yishau Gbolahan, senior managers from Skye Bank Plc and other notable guests.

The Governor later cut the tape to formally declare the estate open before undertaking an inspection of one of the block of flats.

I see good continuation same way Fashola took the baton from Tinubu and actualized Tinubu's plans, the next governor after Fashola is expected to take the same baton from Fashola and continue with the same zeal and energy.

Lagos state is not your average state in Nigeria, Lagosians have state pride state pride and other distinguishing characteristics. The terms Eko o ni baje, Eko for show and other self bragging lingos are their to always remind lagosians to always strive and stay ahead by any means necessary.

It's basically in the blood.

Eko Ile is more than one person, Eko Ile is a state of mind and a way of life and culture.

Must you always talk in a way that starkly exposes your ignorance and bad belle? Fashola  has currently initiated a mortgage scheme running at 6% over 20 years available for workers !!! It would be nigh impossible to find a better rate in Africa. Go and investigate . Your bitching here , as usual , is in bad faith because not many are doing better than Fashola in the effort to make the "common man" a home owner.

The fact is, these sadist are here for a reason, they have to display their only portion in life which is disgruntlement and bad bele, this is their only potion in life.

Fashola addressed ignorant people like him him the article.

And the Governor took it father by highlighting the positive collateral effects of these projects on Lagosians,

Governor Fashola explained that part of the benefit of the project could also be deduced from operations of the State Government partners on the project, Messrs Cortex Limited who have successfully kept its 25 employees at work and paying their salaries.

Obviously this is a high end housing scheme, i don't think there is anything wrong with that. He has also commissioned low cost housing schemes in the past. The exterior of those houses/apts look ugly.
Re: Fashola Commissions 72 Units Of 3 Bedroom Flats by werepeLeri: 4:33pm On Oct 14, 2011

A poor man that cant even afford a one room apartment- they are building "Elegant Court".

God bless the likes of Jakande.

Oga WerepeLeri stop trolling. You wonder why people attack GEJ senselessly yet you do same to Fashola.
Re: Fashola Commissions 72 Units Of 3 Bedroom Flats by EkoIle1: 4:38pm On Oct 14, 2011
Unfortunately, these clowns are yet to recognize the routine and their own foolishness.

Lagos build bridge and they cry

Lagos build metro rail and they fall apart

Lagos build power plant and they lose their minds

Lagos build low cost housing and they pull out their hair

Lagos build 10 lane freeway and they threaten to commit suicide

Though I feel sorry for them, but they make me laugh sometimes sha
Re: Fashola Commissions 72 Units Of 3 Bedroom Flats by werepeLeri: 4:39pm On Oct 14, 2011
You have taken the definition of attack to a very astounding level. When does a question become an attack?

I bow for some people o.

LOL.

They will start shitting in their pants in defence of a Fashola. Hope you have a tissue paper near to you. Or is it water that you use in abluting the shi t?
Re: Fashola Commissions 72 Units Of 3 Bedroom Flats by mikeapollo: 4:39pm On Oct 14, 2011
The question still remains: how much is the cost?
Let us know how affordable the flats are. It is worthless to build flats that can only be accessed by the super-rich in the society.
We are witnesses to Jakande's flats and how affordable they were.

It is very curious that there was no mention of the rate(s) the flats are being offered/sold to the public, , such information should be in the forefront, and not a hidden matter!

just like anyone is free to call GEJ names and call him dunce, dence, doonse, dance or whatever, why is it a sin to call Fashola same names or worse?
Re: Fashola Commissions 72 Units Of 3 Bedroom Flats by Nobody: 4:43pm On Oct 14, 2011
Gov Fashola u've scored so low in housing, accept it. In just 4 yrs of lateef jakande, i cant count thousands of block of flats built, in several estates, and all low income, in just 4yrs. Am yet to see any state gov equal that feat.
Re: Fashola Commissions 72 Units Of 3 Bedroom Flats by Nobody: 4:45pm On Oct 14, 2011
It is time Lagos govt start building vertical to save lands for other activities like recreation, reservation parks, greenery, etc.

Trying to use semantics to wiggle your way out of this?  Anyhow we all know what your intent is.

Oga when something good is done even by the opposition commend it or leave it alone. I used to think you were upset that the criticism that GEJ was getting was unfair but with these your recent comments you come across as just another paid hack - because you are doing what you appear to be against. Don't lose the esteem some NLanders  have for you.

You sound like you would prefer that those houses were never built.   Don't you think a completed project like this is better than the "government to do this, government to do that" propaganda that we get from our present good for nothing "toto Federal government"?

Re: Fashola Commissions 72 Units Of 3 Bedroom Flats by Guardian(m): 5:13pm On Oct 14, 2011
All these una Buhaha !!.

Fashola is doing his bit. Erecting a house nowadays cost much more than the days of Pa Jakunde. The Government project in Lagos is now weighed and decided based on economic importance and gains. Not if the masses have access to it.

The solution to the Accommodation wahala is simple and in the hands of Fashiola,

1. Sign off and open up more landed areas still under government hold
2. If LASG's grudge is on the issue of Omonile's and villagers making too much money. TAX them, head and toe and bind them. Government have Estate valuers.
4. On the issue of Poor construction. LASG can formulate rules that stipulate building approval and construction be carried out only by registered contractors. If the house falls they prosecute them !!
3. Government need to deal with Dangote and his cronies for their wonderful manipulation of cement price. ( How can you explain we have more cement factories and output and yet Prices are high )
