Read some of these cases below and suggest whether our govt should continue wasting tax payers money prosecuting petty crimes when real criminals are out there free from captivity. Or better still, send these petty cases to magistrate courts and decongest our criminal courts.

Man in court for allegedly stealing fowls

Osogbo – A 26-year old man, Emmanuel Adeyinka, on Monday appeared before an Osogbo Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing 14 fowls from a poultry farm.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Isiaka Ajadi, alleged that the accused on Oct 14, at a farm in Osogbo, conspired with other persons now at large to steal 14 fowls valued at N14,400, an offence punishable under Sections 390 and 516 of the state law.

The accused pleaded not guilty and Magistrate Abiodun Ajala granted him bail in the sum of N200,000 with one surety who must be his relation.

The surety must also swear to an affidavit of means and deposit two passport photographs with the court.

Ajala adjourned the case to Nov. 18 for hearing.

4 drivers docked for alleged theft of 14 tyres valued at N1.1m

Also in Asaba  Four drivers were, Monday, arraigned before an Asaba Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing 14 tyres valued at N1.1million.

The accused persons, Sylvester Okocha, 25, Amobi Ananji, 42, Ayodele Dayo, 27 and Chinedu Oputa are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

The Police Prosecutor, Mr Ndidi Ahamefule, told the court that the accused persons and others, now at large, allegedly committed the offence on Oct. 25, at Inter-Bau Construction Company Limited, Asaba.

Ahamefule also told the court that the accused persons, on the same day and place, allegedly stole three tyres of one Mercedes Benz Truck, valued at N240,000.

The tyres were property of Inter-Bau Construction company.

He told the court that the accused persons and others now at large on the same day and place stole seven tyres of another truck valued at N560,000 property of the same company.

He said the accused persons on the same day and place stole four tyres of one Tipper Lorry with registration number BP 311 AGL valued at N320,000, property of the same company.

Ahamefule said that the offence contravened section 390(6) of the Criminal Code C21 Vol. 1, Laws of Delta, 2006.

The accused persons, who however pleaded not guilty to the charges, were granted bail in the sum of N100,000 each and a surety each in like sum, by the Chief Magistrate, Mr Sylvester Ehikwe.

Ehikwe ordered that the sureties should reside within Asaba, provide proof of ownership of landed property within Asaba, two passport-sized photographs and swear to affidavit of means.

Man docked for alleged stealing

And in Abuja the police also arraigned one Adewale Abiola before an Abuja Magistrates’ Court in Life Camp for stealing some plywood from a construction site.

The accused, 30, of no fixed address, was said to have committed the offence at the site in Gwarinpa estate on Oct. 8.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Salisu Mohammed, told the court that one Makanjuola Rauf of Soka area in Kuje Area Council, FCT, reported the case at the Gwarinpa Police Station on Oct. 9.

Mohammed alleged that Abiola went to the site and stole some wood valued at N150,000 as well as 44 aluminium window frames valued at N40,000.

If you don't prosecute petty crimes then those who commit petty crimes will graduate and go on to more serious post-grad crime.
