Shipping Companies decide where to dock.

They decide whether they are enough containers going to a particular Port, and when returning ,if they will get substantial containers from the port or they will be returning empty (economic loss). They also consider security and presence of pirates, the depth of the harbour.

In the 1960s, Merchants ships were not as big as the ships we now have today.

Before 1999, Nigeria used to have her own Shipping company called the Nigerian National Shipping Line (NNSL) which the FG mandated to berth at Sapele, Onne and Calabar Ports.

The ships from NNSL ply all these ports regardless of economic outcomes because the FG paid them whether they make profits or not.

In 1977, my late dad's containers were diverted from Apapa,Lagos to Sapele and Calabar Ports by the Nigerian National Shipping Line as a result of a policy of the Obasanjo's Frderal Military Government.

He had to go by road to these places to clear his goods and brought them to Lagos by road.

The first bolded and the second prove that you are a liar. How can Shipping companies decide where to berth and yet your dad's goods were diverted to Calabar by FG policies, we're not kids here. grin

No business-minded ship will leave Lagos or Onne port which are deeper and easier to berth at, to navigate inland waterways to Imo state to berth.

I don’t know what Ngozi123 is talking about.

Unless Nigeria is landlocked and that Imo riverport at Oguta is the ONLY wateraccess.

Did you read the article? Clearly, there are importers eager to use the seaport. That's why there's interest for it in the first place.

This thread is for the development of Igboland. If you have nothing constructive to say then please leave.

Importer tells shipping company to use Oguta Riverport. Shipping company tells him it’s shallow and narrow and he prefers Lagos or alone port. Importer insists. Shipping company says ok it costs $30,000 extra for narrow navigation. Importer accepts. Importer pays. Goods arrive Oguta Riverport. Importer clears goods and increases cost of goods in the market so as to break even and make profit having spent more $30,000 to berth goods at Oguta.

Competitor importer in same line of business berths his good at Lagos seaport and uses trucks to cargo them into South East and sells same produce for 10,000 naira cheaper than Competitor who imported his goods at Oguta.

He outshines Oguta importer because of more patronage due to cheaper good.

Two scenarios will fall out.

1. Oguta importer makes his loss, regrets it and vows never to import from Oguta Riverport again, resorts to Lagos and Onne port once again.

2. Oguta importer insists importing through Oguta Riverport to grow Igbo maritime and keeps doing business at a loss.

You see why it is a suicide mission either way you look at it?

Enviousness and jealousy is what’s making you people insist on a seaport whereas you don’t have the deep waters for that. You don’t want to use a port in same Nigeria any longer.

That’s fine though. The only solution to two scenarios above is for Eastern Govt to dredge the canal from Atlantic Ocean into the Oguta Riverport. That’s a long nautical miles. It’ll have environmental effects such as land sliding, erosion of land/soil in nearby communities leading to the Oguta Riverport.

FG will not allow it. Not that the erosion can’t be curtailed though. But you’ll spend even more.

Hundreds of Billiond of Dollars will go down the drain.

Beyond that, the East is not directly abbuting the Atlantic ocean. So, the leadership will need the permission of Niger Delta States through which the river flows into Oguta.

Now, will those states give the SE permission to embark on a project intended to bypass the existing Niger Delta port at Onne?

The SE needs to make it a JV with the SS for this to succeed.

What exactly stops Imo state Government from meeting Chinese company to construct a seaport using exactly same approach?? You don’t need your money, they’ll use theirs if they feel it’s feasible and they can recoup their money back.

they will obviously take SE government to court for dredging their land and exposing it to land sliding and erosion which will surely occur if not properly managed. Their chiefs, kings, community leaders and pressure groups will win in court. Not to mention the tribalism that will play out.

Ok you think they will let you dredge it so that Ibom, Onne and Calabar seaports will have less patronage and dredged inland Oguta riverport will boom?

If na you, will you allow such?

how does that relate to my comment? Your governor of imo state does not want to sign agreement with private consortium to develop Oguta lake into viable riverport and dredge it down to atlantic.

Is it federal government that did it for lekki seaport or Lagos state govenrment in partnership with private consortium?

Child, a state government cannot negotiate with an international organisation to work in areas like the airport, seaport, security or oil and gas. Its on the exclusive list. When Jonathan was in power, he muted the idea of dredging the river Niger and he was fought till they removed him. Some people were afraid that it will decongest Lagos.

Ngozi123:
From Obinna Odogwu, Awka

Importers Association of Nigerian (IMAN), yesterday, revealed how a $600 million deal between former Imo state governor, Chief Achike Udenwa, and the Chinese government for a Blue Sea Port project in Oguta Lake was lost.

National President of the association, Mr Kingsley Chikezie, told reporters in Awka that the project, which would have added value to Nigeria’s economy, was frustrated by forces with ethnic colours.

It was equally gathered that to further frustrate the Eastern ports, the importation of pharmaceutical goods was ordered to be done through the Lagos seaports, specifically the one in Apapa.

Chikezie said that had the seaport project been realised, it would have by now helped in the revival of the abandoned Oseakwa Seaport in Ihiala, Anambra State which functionality, he believes, would add value to the economies of the South East and South-South regions.

IMAN, however, called on the governors and the stakeholders in the South East to come together and decide how to revive the Oseakwa Seaport. It also asked it to work more closely with the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to revive the seaport.

Chikezie said: “These are the things and obstacles that we the importers are facing due to the abandonment of the Oseakwa Seaport by successive governments in the country and you know that we in the South East and South-South are the importers.

“We call on the governors of the South East to establish a South East Economic Corporation to kick start the process irrespective of political interests just as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has concluded arrangements for the rail lines that would link up the oil producing states in the area.”

The IMAN National President lamented what became of the Imo/China deal which he said would have provided job opportunities for the youths and encouraged commerce and industry in the South East and South-South had it succeeded.

“I want you to imagine what this place would have been like if that 600 million dollars deal had worked out. And that would have also affected the Oseakwa Seaport project to come on stream by now.

“Today, the NDDC is putting up rail lines linking those areas and the governors of the South East should set up that commission which would have its members drawn from the five states and funded with the equity contributions of the five state governments.

He commended NIWA headed by Chief George Moghalu, for its achievements in reviving some dead and moribund river and sea ports across the country but urged it to partner with the South East Governors Forum (SEGF) to jumpstart the revival of the Oseakwa Seaport.

“There is no doubt that the management of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has been doing their best in the area of recovering our dead or moribund river and sea ports but a lot needs to be done.

“Let our governors in the South East have that synergy with NIWA to look at the Oseakwa Seaport and fashion out ways of making the abandoned Oseakwa Seaport come alive again because our people are going through hell and losing billions of Naira because of the absence of the Oseakwa seaport”, he said.
