EKSG begins a crackdown on unauthorized building structures.

Seals two gas plants, eatery in Ado Ekiti.

… Sets to commence ‘operation show your building plan’

Ekiti State Government has cautioned residents of the State against erecting buildings and other structures indiscriminately and without necessary government approval .

The State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Hon. Karounwi Oladapo, gave the warning on Tuesday as officials of the Ministry sealed some buildings and structures in Ado- Ekiti that were erected in contravention of the extant rules on safety and structural integrity.

Some of the structures that were sealed by officials of the ministry include gas plants of two popular filling stations- AA Rano in Adebayo area and NNPC along Iworoko road as well as a two- storey building housing a popular eatery in Adebayo area.

Speaking with newsmen shortly after the exercise, Hon Oladapo said that government would no longer take it lightly with anyone who carry out construction without building permit. He added that owners and developers of such buildings would face the wrath of the law for ignoring government directives.

Karounwi who berated owners of illegal structures who are in the habit of molesting officials of government, said such owners would henceforth be made to face the full weight of the law.

The Commissioner called on all owners of properties with no government approval to urgently carry out necessary regularization, stressing that the ministry had concluded plans to meet defaulters with stringent measures.

He added that government would soon launch “operation show your building plan” and embark on awareness campaign in all the local government areas, where officials of the ministry would meet the stakeholders and those buildings without plan were to be regularized in accordance with the law.

Hon. Karounwi explained further that any building that would be erected in the state must first get the approval of government. He said the exercise was not about an individual, but to ensure safety and security of the people. He added that government would not wait for any calamity to befall the state before taking necessary actions.

On flooding, the Commissioner reiterated the commitment of Governor Biodun Oyebanji administration to ensure that residents were no longer allowed to build structures that would disturb free flow of water leading to avoidable cases of flooding.

“If you look around, you will see we have a lot of planning problems in Ekiti State, particularly, Ado-Ekiti. People just put up building and structures indiscriminately without any recourse and regard to the building code and urban and regional planning law of 2011.

We want to send the right signal to Ekiti people that never again would anybody, no matter how highly placed, put anything on the ground without seeking to obtain the development plan, without having an approved building plan. Anybody who does that becomes a criminal because you do that in contravention of the law, and the ministry will not hesitate to take such individual to court.

“What we did today was just a starting point and the ministry is not going to relent, some properties were sealed up today and the ministry had contacted the owners several times for them to do the needful. The truth about it is that even before you embark on any development, the ministry must approve of it, but on this instants, they refused to seek the approval of government and the government was not aware of the type of structure they want to put on ground and whether it is compatible with the existing land uses or where they want to build is in consonance with the building code of the state or in line with urban and regional planning law.”

It is always easier to destroy/tear down than to build.

Ask them to build all they are quick to destroy as a state in approved sites and you'd wait for an eternity to see a complete/standard structure not minding the outrageous sum they'd appropriate for such.

Demons from the ground up.

This is obvious competition at its peak. Its Hugh time we flaw all govt bodies from destroying buildings under the disguise of faulting building plans and irregularities.
If irregularities should be tamed it should be from the govt body that have delve into bribery and corruption, shying away there full responsibility to ascertain a credible building approval prior to commencing of foundation. Ain't no way a property will go the first phase of lintel and get to the decking, this fat pot belles won't be aware and there mercenaries won't perceive the brown envelope.
Enough is Enough in this country.
Enough is Enough.

If the bottlenecks, corruption & stress in getting approved building plans were not there, people would willingly get such documents.

The government needs to sanitise itself first & make getting such documents/approval easy with clear guidelines.

The people occupying some of those offices are our brothers and sisters....not government officials. Our government is just a reflection of the entire country. No matter how hard you try, you can't get to some of these people, even if you catch and punish few, you will understand eventually that it will not deter the rest, because it is inherent. Even if you do total overhauling of the system, the freshers will even do far worse. If bankers can device ways to steal from the systems as audited as banks are, imagine across all government parastatals. The same people who claim minimum wage, go to their private lives and see the assets some of these people have.

The fact also is, people do not speak up when exploited, they's rather pay and proceed or proceed without doing the needful.

System Corruption

Smh

Genuine law abiding citizen are frustrated by the govt official when they come for proper approval and etc. They read the room and are forced to drop kola, raba, whatever bribe is called in their domain. This bribe becomes the new fast and furious way to not get frustrated, besides it's not even genuine or within the right metrics.

People build up cos this is Nigeria and then one day, they hear stuff like demolish, seal off, etc, much later, similar to the usual Abuja craze each time a new don is in town. It's crazy that these leaders think this build and destroy system is a good way to begin with. If they tackle from inside and face their greedy staff, 60% of the problem will be solved.

The govt should start in house and deal with those that enable billions of funds to be wasted this way. When one or two scape goats are dealt with, the official will do it the right way even if they still want to colet bribe..

This then, exercise is 50-50

You all are talking about destruction, there is no place in the whole of.the news that says destruction of building, instead get the plan of building that's not properly done, let there be reconstructed or reinforcement and or corrections on such buildings but those buildings that re done on waterways must go, for.the food of the owner and other people around and most especially the govt.

This news will favour some and be against some that's life

Whatever is best for ekiti people

The government must do it with human feelings

Nigerian are already going through a lot right now

The official that will also carry out the governor order should also fear God too

What exactly is your point, please?

No matter how much people speak up, if the government does not do the needful, the status quo remains.

Past & present experiences show that when people speak up in nigeria, they are branded enemies of the state by the same people who say people should speak up against injustice.

It still boils back to those at the helm of affairs.

When you see government officials being openly corrupt, incompetent & lackadaisical in thier duties, check the head(s) of that government or agency, that person is also corrupt & it goes all the way to the top.
