Yoruba leaders identify with Daniel’s travails

The Yoruba mouthpiece, Afenifere Group, yesterday paid a solidarity visit to the immediate past governor of Ogun State, Gbenga Daniel, over his ongoing travails in case against him at the State High Court brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

NEXT reports that the body, led by its national leader, Ayo Fasoranti, arrived the Asoludero palatial home of Daniel in Sagamu, and later went into a closed-doors meeting which lasted for few hours, apparently to fashion out amicable resolution to the controversial trial.

Other notable Yoruba leaders in the team include: Lanihun Ajayi, Ayo Adebanjo, Seinde Arowogbofa, Olu Falae, Pekun Awobona, Lanre Omisore and Dayo Duyile among others. The group’s visit according to findings, lifted the spirit of the former governor.

In a similar vein, eleven of the former local government chairmen who served under Daniel administration were also at his home, to further expresse their loyalty to him. They were led by the former Association of Local Government of Nigeria, John Obafemi.

Others in the entourage include; Babatunde Adesina, Remi Odubote-Ogunkoya, Albert Asipa, Abayomi Tella, Isikilu Makinde, Tiwalade Shobo, Kayode Akintunde, Sikirulai Ogundele, Daisi Akintan and Wale Oshiyemi.

The former chairmen, in turns, expressed their support and loyalty to their former boss, adding that despite all odds, they were optimistic that he would laugh last and come out victorious from the trial.

However, speaking with journalists after the meeting, Reuben Fasoranti said the issue was over dramatized, stressing that having listened to the former governor’s explanation during the meeting, the group was convinced that he would come out free.

Mr Fasoranti stated that, Daniel’s records in the last eight years as the governor of the state was commendable, pointing out that Afenifere would stand by him throughout the trial, emphasizing that nobody should be condemned until when found guilty.

“He did very well in his eight years rule as governor, he is faithful, am sure he will come out free, we shall stand by him and wait for court ruling; you don’t condemn a man until he is found guilty” Fasoranti emphasized.

Similarly, in a communiqué issued, Afenifere said, “we have listened to him we are satisfied with what we have heard, we advised that we should all be fair in our actions by waiting to hear from both side before rushing to judgment, after all the principle is that a man is presumed innocent until the contrary is proved”

“As Afenifere leaders, it behoves us to find out the facts as they relate to the allegations made against our former governor, Gbenga Daniel. We deplore the current trend of media trials which damage potentially innocent people reputation.”

“Even before they are given an opportunity to be heard, a recent and most instructive example is the Baba Suwe episode fiasco. In the meantime we shall be keeping an eye in how things progress as the principles of fair hearing must be strictly adhered to if we are ever to boast of true democracy and civilization in our country Nigeria,” Afenifere stated

Yoruba leaders are seriously becoming "lethargic" sycophants. How dare they commiserate with a thief who stole from poor and defenseless Yorubas.

They don't deserve to be killed but they are just sycophants who can do anything for money. Why people choose to call themselves leaders of ethnic groups when nobody elected them beats me. Have you heard of caucasian leader before unless the person is an elected representative?. That way, when they start misbehaving in a very shameful way, they can be recalled.

They are not insane, are they?. People identified with Ibori, Akingbola, Ibru, Abacha, IBB, etc. Why can't Daniel receive the same gesture from his longer throat kinsmen. Money good oo.

Why do you even want somebody whom you did not elect to be your representative?
Re: Yoruba Afenifere Leaders Paid Solidarity Vist To Gbenga Daniel by Pukkah: 9:21pm On Oct 19, 2011
This is utterly disappointing! And they should please not mention the case of Baba Suwe in the same breath as that of Daniel! This is a low point in the fight against corruption in Nigeria.

It may be legally right to assume Daniel is innocent but it's not morally right to make a spectacle out of paying a visit to someone like that with a case in court. By the way, why didn't they pay the same visit to Tinubu or even Akala?

Asiwaju is their arch-enemy. The call EFCC, INTERPOL, FBI, SCOTLANDYARD every day on his azz. I was wondering the same thing, should Yoruba leaders be protesting with placards over the illegal detention of Baba Suwe?.

^^^It's a pity but I think, technically speaking, Nigeria has split. The spirit is asunder but the body still appears to be one.

Who elected/appointed these people as Yoruba leaders?
Re: Yoruba Afenifere Leaders Paid Solidarity Vist To Gbenga Daniel by aloyemeka1: 10:23pm On Oct 19, 2011
Because Nigerians have the habit of calling people their leaders or militants/security without duly electing them. If you question their leadership, then be ready to question the leadership of those Yorubas who you subscribe to their authority because theirs is not a unanimous choice.
