Manufacturers Sack 3,567 Workers, Unsold Goods Hit ₦‎272 Billion – MAN by TajuDEENaMao: 8:10am On Sep 27, 2023
No fewer than 3,567 jobs were lost in the manufacturing sector in the first half of 2023 according to figures obtained by The PUNCH from the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria.

MAN disclosed this in its half yearly review of the economy, which was released on Tuesday.

According to the report, employment generation in the manufacturing sector declined to 6,428 in the first half of 2023.

This was 32.8 per cent reduction in employment generation capacity when compared with 9,559 jobs generated in the first half of 2022.

The report read partly, “In the same vein, a total of 3,567 jobs were lost in the first half of 2023, indicating 1,855 more jobs lost when compared with the 1,709 jobs lost in the corresponding half of 2022, and 850 more jobs lost when compared with 2708 jobs lost in the last half of 2022.”

MAN said the decline in the number of jobs created in the sector during the period further highlighted the unfriendly business environment, resulting from the hasty policies and residual effect of the currency redesign policy that led to the naira crunch.

The report also stated that the inventory of unsold finished products in the manufacturing sector increased to N271.9bn during the first half of 2023, compared to N187bn in the corresponding period of 2022.

This indicated a substantial rise of N84.88bn or 45.4 per cent over the timeframe. It also showed N11.64bn or 4.1 per cent decline when compared with the inventory value of N283.6bn recorded in the second half of 2022.

“This increase in inventory can be attributed to a weakened purchasing power of the consumers, brought about by diminishing real household income resulting from the ongoing escalation of inflationary pressures, compounded by the scarcity of naira in the first quarter of the year and the aftermath of the subsidy removal,” the report said.

It noted that subsidy removal and exchange rate unification policy towards the end of the first half left the economy on the brink of uncertainty, caused a ripple effect that further eroded investors’ confidence.

MAN stated that, “As a result, businesses and foreign investors are increasingly wary of committing capital, thereby hindering economic growth and prospects for recovery.

“The combined effect of these is the resultant higher inflationary pressure, which fuels the cost of production, reducing consumers’ purchasing power and having a greater impact on the manufacturers.”

I remembered how I campaigned against Tinubu presidential ambition because he's just useless and have nothing to offer Nigerians.

I was attacked, abused and threatened by his herds of foolish and useless supporters in Osun state, but look where we are right now under his rule .
Every sector of the economy is in total collapse .

Companies are shutting down in large numbers, people are commiting suicide in large numbers due to hardship, many homes are broken because the bread winner could no longer put food on the table .

I am not happy with the situation that many Nigerians have found themselves in this Tinubu government and I pray that God comes to the rescue of Nigerians because Tinubu is clueless and totally useless to the country right about now.

Foreigners are not willing to invest in Nigeria

If people are not really buying things, why's inflation still rising? Or is it the weakening of the naira that's really making inflation rise?

Honestly, this is the starting. I had told someone that if Tinubu took over power, Nigeria will plunge into total disrepair. The poverty will keep increasing, people will keep losing their jobs, people will keep 'japa'ing (it actually get more difficult everyday now because of the worsening rate). People who work in such places as FCMB, and perhaps some other banks, will turn to beggars soon, unless this trend is reversed.

Same would have happened if Atiku had taken power, but the pace would be slower that this man. NOBODY WANTS TO BRING HIS MONEY TO INVEST IN NIGERIA.

The country has been auctioned long time ago. You borrow money only to be looted again and the debt servicing keep increasing. OBJ government did her best and cleared our debts totally. But after that, idiots in power highjacked everything again. No foreign institutions will want to help again. They wont trust nigeria. Its high time we start looking inward totally and reset by creating regional government to stand competitively.

Every jack and harry is an importer, putting pressure on what is not available and has been looted long time ago- the dollar. Majority of junks that supposed not even to exist or supposed to have been destroyed abroad find its way into the country and consituting nuisance to the environment, killing little alternatives that are indigeneous and putting pressure on the exchange rates.
Take or example, ankara is now soley produced and imported from china, million of yards monthly, something they dont even wear or use, and same people rush to fx market to sort for importation money in dollars.
Foreign reserves are zeros because all the dollars are in few hands especially the politicians , cabals and their families, living large in abroad. Fuel markets are doing their own, sabotaging the economy for their selfish gains in the name of doing business.
After serving and killing nigeria economy, they run back to leave affluently abroad... Now everything is about to scatter more. Expect more hardship.... no money anywhere again...it will stabilize later but not until many things have been grounded and many have dropped dead or out of work or school. It is not well with nigeria.
I always ask, what will atiku , obi , kwankwaso do differently practically today with deplicated foreign reserves and high debt profiles? i dont think it will be much difference cos politicians cum cabals have long highjacked nigeria, leaving much naira in the hand of a common man to be chasing few dollars to make ends meet through importation that is killing the economy in order for them to survive. What a country!.

I doubt if the president will not be impeached soon. People can't buy goods collecting salary that remain the same after subsidy removal have reduced purchasing power by over 150%. Equation must balance, you removed subsidy then you were supposed to quickly increase salary to maintain working economy but FG things workers are nobody and means nothing, hope that ignorant won't ruin this administration kpatakpata.

Dagbo CSU first class account graduate the master strategist is working. He made Lagos a mega city and he is making Nigeria the best country in the world. 🌽 Eaters I hope you are loving this. The great Obafemi Awolowo was a man billion miles away. Some people have the audacity to compare Bola Tinubu to Chief Awolowo. What a disgrace?

Exactly my thinking too.
If demand reduced and supply increased, ordinarily prices should go down but prices keep increasing.
This is just crazy

Bola Tinubu force to get into power bring disaster to Nigeria and Nigerians in general. No hope in sight. It’s hunger, suffering and smiling everywhere you go. It has now results from bad to worse. It has results to from frying pan to fire. Bola Tinubu government destroyed things no be small .

Tinubu has failed woefully completely in governance, Tinubu is not our Messiah in Nigeria, He increased the price of fuel, increased the tuition fees- Yoruba Muslim cleric

Hear what this cleric has to say about Nigeria's situation. I really love the last words of this Yoruba cleric, he really understands the Nigeria situation and the mere solution to the crisis Nigerians are facing in electing our leaders. The Yoruba Muslim cleric emphasised on Education, it really shows that education is the bedrock of the nation building in Nigeria and Nigeria leaders should build their government upon.
