Below were the Foreign Exchange Rates In September 1983. N1 ( one naira ) was exchanging for 💲1.50😮😮😮 A few months later, on 31st December 1983, Buhari and some fellow coupists overthrew the democratically elected government of Shehu Shagari. The significant damage the Buhari junta visited on the economy before being booted out of office by Gen Ibrahim Babangida was child's play compared to the catastrophe he visited on us between 2015 & 2023, thanks to Tinubu who brought him to power. Thanks to Buhari & APCbfor their efforts at taking the exchange rate to N1000 to 💲1. The IBB regime shouldn't have released him from house arrest..😡😡😡 At this period, minimum wage was about N100 ( one hundred Naira), equipment to 💲150 . What you need to understand is that all these were actually incorrect figures. We keep hearing how Niara was so strong in the past, but the truth is the currency was tightly controlled and only a few people had access to it. Many firms had already started going out of business in the 80's due to lack of FX. If you wanted to travel the govt restricted the amount of FX you could take (It was called BTA, Basic travel allowance and you had to get it form the bank) Those figures are just propoganda 2 Likes 1 Share |

See when the naira was even contesting with the £ and $ before a dullard was put in power by fellow coupists who ended bastardizing the little left of the naira. Fast forward to 2015, the same bag on tired bones coupist was resurrected and foisted again to complete the damage he left in 1984. Since then it have been more free fall for the naira till date especially with the criminal illegitimate president on seat today. |

You could travel with your naira and exchange it in any country that you arrived at, until Buhari / IBB /Abacha happened on Dec. 31, 1983. |
