You forgot to read further. Isaac and his son were eventually sent out while he kept digging well faraway from Gerar until he was very faraway from Gerar. He later settled in Bethsheba.

Personally, I have always felt the whole place, including Gerar (Gaza) was mostly a desert place with few people in the desert at the time only Isaac/Abraham were there. Thus they were able to move to another desert place where there was no one to disturb them.

That was before his grandchildren went to sojourn in Egypt and later came back.
