Nigeria has been unable to fully reap the benefits of increasing crude oil prices at the international market, as market report says there were about 30 oil cargoes yet to find buyers at the international market.

Market data report obtained from Reuters, said as of Tuesday, between 20 and 30 crude cargoes for November were without buyers, far more than was typically expected to be left over at this stage of the trading cycle.

The market is “very, very sluggish,” another trader said. “The market is going down, margins look bad,” the report said quoting trading sources.

Although some of Nigeria’s crude grade such as Bonga crude was offered at a premium of $9 a barrel to the benchmark dated Brent, while Escravos and Forcados were on offer in excess of $8 in October, however, the report said freight rates have since jumped and refiners’ profit margins have narrowed, weighing on demand.

The low demand had in turn caused the country’s crude grades to fall by $1 to $2 a barrel, traders said.

Crude oil prices in some of the world’s main physical markets have weakened due to a jump in freight costs and a drop in refining margins, according to traders and London Stock Exchange Group data, suggesting demand weakness that could filter through to the futures market.

Problem is lot of unserious elements in the oil sector ..
Effect of time wasters .. many buyers don’t trust the government mandates , they just rip you off and disappear.

Yes, this is our problem as a country

Oil is our only source of income, and it isn't enough anyway.

The people are the real problem of Nigeria not officials, not politicians, not our leaders. We like to pass the buck because it absolves us of our complicity and responsibilities. All these people you mentioned are the people, it is the people that become politicians, elected officials and politicians.

It is the same “people” that steal rail tracks, road railings, streetlights, do rituals, drive against traffic etc etc etc that become politicians elected officials and leaders…..so then what do you expect? We talk as if politicians, elected officials etc are foreigners or aliens and not our friends, relatives, brothers and sisters just like us. As if the average Nigerian will stop being what he is simply because he is now a politician or elected official?

This is not uncommon in commodities markets. It's called inventory build up and in a twinkle, it can reverse. You can't perfectly time the market. Even as it is , there are buyers who will quickly mop it up if you give discounts but OPEC will not like that. Check my signature for free stuffs!

Why can't we stop this reliance on oil?
Re: 30 Nigerian Oil Cargoes Dumped Over Sluggish Demand by nairalanda1(m): 12:49pm On Oct 28, 2023
Abagworo:
Why can't we stop this reliance on oil?

Because it involves a lot of hard choices, including a long road to industrial development which does not yield quick dividends, as well as things like improving tax revenues, which most of us do not like.

No big deal. By the time the Arabs join the Israeli war, the demand for our oil will dramatically increase.

Note that this is the least of our problems. Sadly we do not have competent decision makers that can check inflation. I weep for my country.

It would have been much better if we were refining our crude. I don't think we will find it difficult selling refined products.
