The Federal Government on Monday, launched the E-ticket platform for Lagos-Ibadan and Warri-Itakpe rail lines.

This launch followed several complaints by passengers about ticket racketeering amidst other unethical practices.

The Minister of Transportation, Saidu Alkali, speaking at the official launch of the E-ticketing platform held at the ministry headquarters in Abuja, said the government is ready to improve its revenue by utilising all internally generated revenue through technology channels available to it.

He said the platform was launched to improve access to transportation services, end ticket racketeering and eliminate revenue leakage.
He revealed that the e-ticketing platform would take effect from November 1st, 2023 and can be accessed via https://nrc.tps.ng.

The minister said, “The essence of E-ticketing is to make it easy for our passengers to buy tickets, for security purposes and to stop ticket racketeering. it will also ensure the security of our passengers onboard the train and avoid racketeering.

“From Wednesday, November 1st, Nigerians will enjoy the benefit of buying tickets at their own convenience and without any issues.”

On his part, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Fidet Okharia, stated that the initiative had increased its weekly revenue on the Warri-Itakpe route to N28 million.

“I am so happy about this project, apart from the fact that e-ticketing will end issues of ticket racketeering, it will also increase the revenue from the routes. This means by the time e-ticketing commences, there is a likelihood that our revenue will increase.

“I can also announce that for the fear of the e-ticketing coming, we can see our revenue growing. I can boldly say that throughout last week, we didn’t earn anything less than N4m a day on the Itakpe Warri route,”

“I am certain that with this launch, I will stop receiving calls on why my staff are cheating Nigerians,” he stated.

The NRC DG restating his commitment to end unethical practices revealed that 14 persons have been heavily sanctioned for ticket racketeering.

The PUNCH reports that the contract for the E-ticketing of the rail routes was approved by the Federal Executive Council in May 2023 at the cost of N1.96 billion with an expected revenue of N176bn in ten years.

You spend over $3 billion dollars for rail ways and you are expecting $170 million dollars in
10 years ..... Am sure it cost more than $50 million to run these trains yearly

My issue is we Borrowed money to build this rubbish trains that has little or no economic benefits... How can you borrow money to build something that would make u spend more money

Socialism is anti development

If $3 billion dollars were given to pharmaceutical companies in Nigeria since 2015 as a loan at 5%

1) we would have that money back again plus 5% interest
2) we would be a net exporter of drugs earning dollars
3) companies revenues would grow increasing government revenue
4) thousand would be employed increasing payee tax
5) GDP would have grown by at least 8 billion dollars

If we give that to garment factory
If we used that money to revive aluminum company in ikot ekpene
If we used that money to help glass importers set u floating glass factory
If we used that money to help Leather works industry
If we used that money to make improved agriculture seedlings available

Each of this would yeild more

Just like the useless awolowo cocoa house that can never break even in this life or the next... Nigerian APC leaders like feel good projects...
To them economic viability is not important
Just build it let people praise us

Tech will always destroy easy frauds. The type of corruption going on the railway system is too massive.

My wife's friend that came from kaduna to abuja yesterday told us that she couldn't get ticket even after getting there on time. She said that the official staff there buy all the tickets at 3k and sell it there over the counter for 7k.

We have a long way to go as a country

UnfroznMoisture:
Surest way to increase revenue is to remove bad leaders who are filling their pockets with public funds, not e-ticketing

I've never heard it said better!! Remove them and revenue will rise

It should be e-ticketing at slightly reduced rate to the same day or cash rate.

But the machines need to work and sack staff with top 10% failure rate (suspected) tampering as a capability issue.

You dont seem to understand the benefit of effective transportation to economic growth, business and development. It transcends cashback, has multiplier effect on growth. I currently run a project in Kaduna with my business based in abuja. I am able to plan my movement and cummute with ease, both my abuja and kaduna business are running smothly, imagine knowing you cannot miss an appointment beacuse the train is always on time no delays or hitches. This is what investors look at to make business investment decisions

Those who have been benefitting from this looting exercise, their next target now is , how to derail the train or arrange with kidnapers so that they can make the train service less attractive to passengers.

The problem of Nigeria is Nigerian.
