The Lagos State Government has sealed 8 commercial lockup shops on Dosunmu street, Lagos Island, warehousing firecrackers in very unsafe conditions.

In a statement issued by the The Honorable Commissioner, Ministry of Special Duties & Intergovernmental Relations, Hon. Gbenga Oyerinde reiterated Mr Governor's commitment to the protection of lives and properties of Lagosians noting that the safety of people comes first.

He said Safety Commission being one of the agencies under the Ministry will continue to leave up to its responsibilities by identifying unsafe conditions and providing mitigation against them.

He said anyone or market places found flagrantly violating safety rules will face the full weight of the Law.

You are a clown.
It is an unsafe act and practice to store explosives and highly inflammable substances without proper handling.
The fire outbreak in Dosomu on Sunday was as a result of this

That is a good move by LASG. Warehousing fireworks without the appropriate safety measures can cause fire outbreak which will affect other people's shop

The only unusual thing this time is that it occurred during the Rainy Season.

It has almost become a tradition that there should be major fire outbreaks at Oko Baba (on the Mainland) and on Lagos Island sometime between September and January every year. The reason for the fire outbreaks is quite obvious.

Oko Baba is a gigantic illegal sawmill. Dry wood is stored haphazardly over a wide area in Ebute Metta. The wood and sawdust is often burnt there, making it difficult for motorists on Third Mainland Bridge to see (driving down that stretch of the bridge is extremely dangerous because of the smoke). The Government has had plans to relocate the sawmills for a very long time. These plans have often been frustrated by people who spread rumours that the government just wants to steal land. It seems as if there is a major fire outbreak at that place every single dry season. There was another fire outbreak there yesterday.

There have also been fire outbreaks at the various markets on Lagos Island almost every Dry Season since the 1980s. One of the reasons for the fires on Lagos Island is the enormous amount of illegal fireworks that are stored there every Christmas season. The fire in 2012 caused such a huge explosion that some people thought that Boko Haram militants had bombed Lagos. The explosion was so powerful that it knocked down part of the building in which the fireworks were stored. The sale, distribution and use of these fireworks have been illegal since the early 1980s, but people keep using them during the Christmas season and so there is a huge market for them and this market is centred around Lagos Island.

The large number of clothes that are sold on Lagos Island also serve as fuel for these fire outbreaks that occur during the Dry Season. On one occasion someone was trying to refuel an electricity generator that was still on and this caused a fire that burnt through bales of fabric.

It's great to hear that the Lagos State Government is taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of its citizens. The sealing of 8 commercial lockup shops that were warehousing firecrackers in unsafe conditions is a responsible and necessary action. Safety should always be a top priority, and it's reassuring to see the Honorable Commissioner, Hon. Gbenga Oyerinde, emphasizing this commitment to protecting the lives and properties of Lagosians.

The involvement of the Safety Commission, an agency under the Ministry of Special Duties & Intergovernmental Relations, in identifying and mitigating unsafe conditions is essential. By enforcing safety rules and regulations, the government can help prevent accidents and protect the well-being of the public.

It's also crucial that there are consequences for those who blatantly violate safety rules. Enforcing the full weight of the law sends a strong message that non-compliance with safety regulations will not be tolerated. This, in turn, should encourage businesses and individuals to prioritize safety in their operations.

This is a positive step toward ensuring a safer and more secure environment for Lagosians, and it reflects a government that is committed to its citizens' well-being.
