The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife said it was meeting the officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission following the arrest of 69 suspected Internet fraudsters, many of whom are students of the university.

Fifty eight of the students were later released late Wednesday.

Officials of the EFCC in a midnight raid stormed hostels outside the OAU campus, including Fine Touch and Superb hostels in the Oduduwa Estate, Ile-Ife, broke into rooms, and arrested the students.

The Students’ Union President, Akinremi Ojo, said on Wednesday morning the union had details of “72 students picked up from the hostel with phones and cars taken away.” The president demanded the release of the students while condemning the approach of the arrests.

A former union official, Joy Abiola, told our correspondent that the students were beaten during the arrests.

Abiola told PUNCH Metro that, “The EFCC officials came between 1:40 a.m. and 4:00 a.m.,” saying, “Only students stay in those hostels. How can you arrest people for owning iPhones, laptops, and cars? Some of the students are only tech experts.”

In a video shared with our correspondent by one of the students, several young persons said to be students of the hostel were seen being marched into a white Hummer Bus with some security officials hitting them and ordering them to move and enter quickly.

In another video, about six vehicles were seen alongside the white Hummer Bus as they left Ile-Ife for the EFCC zonal office in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Meanwhile, the EFCC in a statement on its verified Facebook page hours later confirmed that it arrested 69 suspects in Ile-Ife. The anti-graft agency listed the names of the suspects but was silent on their identity as students.

“They were arrested on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at the Oduduwa Estate area of Ile-Ife, Osun State, following actionable intelligence on their suspected involvement in fraudulent Internet-related activities. Credible intelligence linked Oduduwa Estate with activities of suspected internet fraudsters,” the statement said.

The agency disclosed further that, “The suspects have made useful statements to the EFCC and will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.”

Hours after the arrests, several OAU students led by union officers mobilised from Ile-Ife to the EFCC office in Ibadan to demand the release of their colleagues. They were seen protesting as the armed security operatives barricaded the EFCC premises.

“We’re here until they release the students,” the PRO of the Students’ Union, Elijah Omisore, told PUNCH Metro in a telephone interview.

The Osun Joint Campus Committee arm of the National Association of Nigerian Students in a statement also condemned the arrest of students.

“Without any justification or evidence, they invaded the residence of the OAU students and transported them (the students) to Ibadan. We condemn this action in the strongest possible terms,” the spokesperson for the student body, Adedapo Emmanuel, said in a statement.

While speaking with our correspondent on Wednesday evening, the Public Relations Officer of the university, Abiodun Olarewaju, said, “we (the management) are currently at the EFCC office in Ibadan to meet the officials.”

He later confirmed that “58 of the students were released to us. The remaining 11 of them have cases to answer.”

You leave politicians dey pursue students and any good looking young boys and girls.

The same efcc are thieves, they go after who they know are harmless and can't do them harm, owning an iphone, MacBook has now become a crime in my dear country.

I'm so sure if those efcc guys are not efcc, many if not all will also be fraudsters or criminal, small opportunity, you're going out of your job description..

As human we only criticize what we don't benefits from..
We're all bloody hypocrite.

This level of unprofessionalism is top-notch. How do you arrest 69 students without good and accurate Intel on who's into crime and who's not

No wonder a lot of people are in prison for crimes they know nothing about, just been at the wrong/right place at the wrong/right time during police random raids.

Nigeria is not a place.

It is not wrong to detain someone for investigation... Especially if they have any proof or reason to. It's only a matter of HOW they're treated in custody; which shouldn't last longer than 24hours. I only wish they were that swift with our politicians. 😒

If the Fbi operated this way. They would have been closed by court cases since 1960. Efcc is a rogue agency that its time has come for a serious review.

The nigerian Air scammers
School feeding scammers
The market money scam
Covid scammers
And a lot more are still untouched. But the agency that should attend to issues like this is chasing petty boys with laptop.
A former governor is on air claimjng he can demand billions monthly from a state purse and nothing will happen. Cause agencies that should curtail such dictatorships are at sleep

But how come EFCC uses so much force and illegality to arrest the youth for supposed/suspected internet fraud and leave the politicians who have actually ruined/continue to ruin the country? Was the EFFC created to run after "Yahoo Boys"?
Obiviously, they have actually abandoned the ECONOMIC crimes in their duty to chase after only the FINANCIAL crimes.

APC administration successfully transformed EFCC to something else, outside the main aim and purpose of the organisation. They practically do not go after the political thieves who are the main causes of our economic woes as a nation except for vendetta and political persecution of opposition.

It is a shame that they reduced EFCC to some unserious organisation targeting the youth who are doing all they can to escape poverty through IT.

You want them to stop crime, but don't want them to raid bad boys. Those people aren't magicians.

how much is the minimum wage?
How much is a meal?
How much the parents the make monthly?
How much can they give to the kids as pocket money?
How much lecturers(through books and assignments), transport, clothing, housing, beverage etc de consume from these fees?
What are the incentives to give students hope to pull through decently..... (NUMBER 1 CITIZEN DID WURUWURU TO THE ANSWER)

With these minor point... Collectively as a nation.. What were you expecting...

Graciously we are raising a nation of cultists and yahoo boys(breaks my heart but what are the other options?)
Ignorantly we are raising a country of ashewos, women that see themselves as puna and breast only, if dem no nack, they cant eat... Pls i beg, i need someone to logically convince me otherwise, please...

So out of 69 students only 11 have cases to answer.... If I was d vice chancellor.... All d students would be released for dis nonsense alone.... U arrested 69 students published their names as suspected fraudsters, so if d students didn't protest, d students won't be released....

D management of the sch should ensure d remaining students are released.... What nonsense

So the trauma and damages inflicted on the innocent students you are fine with it? Its people like you that made me decide never to fight for this country. I mean How will someone read this and say there's nothing wrong with it. You destroyed these students rooms, assaulted them point guns to their heads. Kidnapped them and their belongings took them to another state question and release them without those belongings for them to trek back if not for the student union who were there. And in your head there is nothing wrong with it. You really deserve your leaders I swear

EFCC shout go after our politicians and not our students. The rule of laws of my beloved country has been jeopardize by politicians and the rich. In Nigeria right now everyone is struggling for survival, while our politicians are enjoying. We are being oppressed by our politicians.
