Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo has insisted that Western liberal democracy has not worked for Africa.

Obasanjo said liberal democracy does not take into account the continent’s history, culture and tradition.

The former President explained that the Western style of democracy failed in Africa because it does not consider the views of the majority of the people.

He stated this while delivering his keynote address at a high-level consultation on ‘Rethinking Western Liberal Democracy for Africa’ in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital.

Obasanjo, the convener of the gathering, described Western liberal democracy as “a government of a few people over all the people or population and these few people are representatives of only some of the people and not full representatives of all the people.

”Invariably, the majority of the people are wittingly or unwittingly kept out, he said.”

He advocated for what he termed, ‘Afro democracy’ in place of Western liberal democracy.

According to him, African countries have no business in operating a system of government in which they have no hand in its “definition and design”

Obasanjo said, “The weakness and failure of liberal democracy as it is practised stem from its history, content and context and its practice.

“Once you move from all the people to a representative of the people, you start to encounter troubles and problems. For those who define it as the rule of the majority, should the minority be ignored, neglected and excluded?

“In short, we have a system of government in which we have no hands to define and design and we continue with it, even when we know that it is not working for us.

“Those who brought it to us are now questioning the rightness of their invention, its deliverability and its relevance today without reform.

“The essence of any system of government is the welfare and well-being of the people: all the people.

“Here, we must interrogate the performance of democracy in the West when it originated from and with us the inheritors of what we are left with by our colonial powers.

“We are here to stop being foolish and stupid. Can we look inward and outward to see what in our country, culture, tradition, practice and living over the years that we can learn from, adopt and adapt with practices everywhere for a changed system of government that will serve our purpose better and deliver?

“We have to think out of the box and after, act with our new thinking. You are invited here to examine clinically the practice of liberal democracy, identify its shortcomings for our society and bring forth ideas and recommendations that can serve our purpose better, knowing human beings for what we are and going by our experiences and the experiences of others.

“We are here to think as leaders of thought in academia and leaders of thought with some experience in politics.”

Those fools quoting me that the whites does not like us most of the big companies that is no longer in voke who brought them to Nigeria? Most Nigerians are wealthy before because of the white men rule my Dad end at just waec with that his result he was able to secure a job at Texaco and he has built 2 world class hotels me that is a Bsc and Ond holder is laugishing in 50k per month job. Suffering and smiling people the white are far better than our leaders. APC supporters are clowns

It is better than the alternative of military intervention in governance.

We only need to develop truly home grown processes and solutions to our internal realities. We do not necessarily need to copy verbatim everything the western world dictates as the "best", we can work around their template and find something suitable for us.

He is indirectly saying we should go back to military era right? Someone should remind him that Tinubu is the president and he will not hesitate nor mind OBJ's age if need be to pay OBJ back in his own coin.

The man is talking from a mindset with greed. You know as a military ruler, your tenure is only as long as you want. You are not bound to leave after 4 or 8 years. Remember he actually wanted to go for the impossible 3rd term. Him bin no wan commot which is not possible under democracy. That's why he doesn't like the idea of democracy.

Nothing will work with the level of corruption and wickedness in the land.

Perhaps instantaneous judgement from certain dieties could keep things in check.

Until then, forget it. The majority are too toxic and selfish to make the country work.

Most of the people criticising the government will do worse if they’re in power.

Everything stinks from top to bottom. Let’s not also forget the greedy hypocrites in the various religious institutions.

Truth be told democracy wasn't designed for Africa. Naturally an African man has an entitlement mentality, give an African man a cup of tea he would drink the tea and seize the cup. An African man would turn power into a tool for oppression. An African man has no respect for institution as long as it doesn't favor him. An African man would turn laws into what suites man, he would bend the constitution to favor him. An African man believes power is a right forgetting it is a privilege. In short Africa man is worse than a bloody white Racist.

We are a nation of different people brought together by force. If Nigeria will still remain, then the only solution is regional leadership.

We can divide to 3 regions . North ,south and west.. each region will have a prime minister( acting as senate President)heading each region. Then there will be a central head whom the regional head are are answerable to. Governors will still head their states under each regional leaders. The senate and judiciary chambers at federal level will be abolished in place of the regional heads. Simple something

Please do not listen to this guys (politicians), there is no different between any africa ruler (be it politicians or military) they are all puppets serving their master and inflict pains on the black people of Africa.

Please grow your own food, love your neighbors and build a personal relationship with your heavenly Father. Disconnect completely from both politicians and religious leaders, and plan your life outside them.
