In a stark departure from its vibrant past, Ocheja Hostel, a once-prominent boys' hostel at Kogi State University, Anyigba, has now succumbed to the relentless forces of neglect and decay. What was once a bustling center of student life has been reduced to a dilapidated relic, overtaken by bushes and transformed into an unfortunate symbol of abandonment.

Historical Significance:

Ocheja Hostel holds significant historical importance for the Kogi State University community. It served as a home away from home for countless students over the years, offering a space for camaraderie, shared experiences, and memories that lasted a lifetime. However, the current state of the hostel paints a starkly different picture.

Current Condition:

The hostel, which should be echoing with the lively sounds of student activities, now stands in ruins. The structures, once bustling with youthful energy, have given way to dilapidation. A visit to the site reveals an alarming transformation, with the hostel resembling more of a neglected space than an integral part of the university.

Transformation into a Toilet:

Adding to the distressing state of affairs, it has come to light that Ocheja Hostel has been repurposed into an unauthorized toilet facility. The stench that now permeates the air is a far cry from the memories of laughter and camaraderie that once defined this iconic structure.

Bushes Take Over:

Nature, in the form of overgrown bushes and weeds, has unapologetically claimed the spaces that were once well-manicured and frequented by students. The hostel, now barely recognizable, stands in stark contrast to the memories engraved in the hearts of those who once called it home.

Calls for Intervention:

The lamentable state of Ocheja Hostel calls for urgent attention from the university authorities, government bodies, and concerned stakeholders. The heritage of such a revered institution should not be left to wither away in neglect. Immediate intervention is crucial to restore this iconic structure to its former glory and preserve its historical significance.

Student Reactions:

Current and former students express a mix of nostalgia and sorrow as they witness the decay of a place that was once an integral part of their university experience. Social media platforms are abuzz with alumni sharing pictures of the hostel in its prime, juxtaposed against its current, forlorn state.

We should be recolonized. Nigeria was not that bad during colonial and military era. Politicians in democratic dispensation have ruined the country.

The problem is Yahaya Bello. The past administrations did very well to fix these things and got things working well.

But this guy called Bello is a big disaster.

Their so called democracy is a big scam if you asked me here. During the military era, such things like this won’t have happen. They only make used of their democracy to steal, kill and destroyed. Upon the state Governor they have in Kogi State, still things aren’t done well, even the citadel of learning are in comatose state and heavy billions of naira are been budgeted for this kind of project every year. It’s very unfortunate situation in Kogi State.

We don't have government in Nigeria
What we have are pure thieves skilled in the art of stealing who are mainly focused in stealing. Nothing more.

The reality which we must all face is that maintaining a structure such as a hostel where anything from 500-1000 students are residing is a capital intensive venture:
Water into at least 4 overhead tanks has to be pumped at least 2-3times a day.
The toilets have to be cleaned and regularly replaced because they naturally develop faults with continuous use by such a large number:imagine having to run each flushing system about 50times alone in the morning, maybe another 100 in evenings and nights when students return from the days activities.
Power has to be on to run these things, usually the school relies on diesel powered generators, they also develop fault or breakdown even when serviced regularly. To run a diesel gen for even 12hours a day for a month runs into millions.
Electric connections have to be regularly fixed, environment kept clean, toilets washed, for which you have to employ several cleaners.
Security had to be provided for each hostel aside hostel masters.
So it's either governments pump generous sums for maintenance or schools charge appropriate fees as hostel fees.
Anything less than either of these 2 options will inevitably lead to the state of hostels like that cited in this thread.

This is in Kogi not an issue of Nigeria.
If Nigeria split, it will still not work especially SE.

Must you wait for Whites to advise you to dispose shiit properly ? angry

It is a cultural thing.... Japanese kids are made to clean their own classrooms and toilets from childhood.

That's why after World Cup, their fans stayed back to clean their trash. Their professional football players clean up their own dressing rooms.
