What Could Shade Have Done Differently To Avoid Her Current Situation???? by Meerahbel: 6:04pm On Dec 07, 2023
Shade worked in the bank for about 6 years, when the bank was downsizing, Shade was part of the employees who were laid off.

Four months down the line she was job hunting with no success at it, shade had to reach out to an old friend who gave her a link and she was able to get back into the corporate world. 8 months down the line, shade started looking for better opportunities and started applying to other places, her current place of work is not toxic nor bad per se but Shade just felt she should be earning more.

She was interviewed for an Admin Manager role in a medium-sized organization, she passed the interview and was told to resume immediately. Shade without due diligence tendered her resignation with immediate effect and went to resume at the new place.

Her first-month salary was paid and she was shocked she did not get what she expected, 5 months down the like salaries was inconsistent, she had not gotten her offer letter.

What could Shade have done differently to avoid her current situation?

She chose title over structure. By structure, I mean the reputation of her newest employer. By title, I mean the newest position she allegedly got.

Her newest employer has a bad structure. A well-structured organisation discusses salary during the recruitment stage and will be consistent in paying salaries as long as the company is in operation.

Don't choose an organisation because of the title (position) it offers you. Choose an organisation based on its structure. A senior cleaner in a well-structured organisation is better than a secretary or an accountant in an ill-structured organisation. I know a private organization where a security man who retired after working for about 16 years got more than ₦3m as his retirement benefit, and he got the money within 7 days after he retired. This happened in Nigeria, not in Canada, and the organisation is not an oil company or a bank.

1. Do due diligence before joining any organization

2. Ensure to receive, review, and sign the offer letter before resumption.

3. Know the salary breakdown. Gross and net.

4. Do not forget 1-3

Merry Xmas in advance

Now this is the thing, it is very important no matter how juicy an offer is, to sign offer letters and contracts before starting any job and resigning from your previous employer.

Because when you sign contracts and offer letter, you’d acknowledge you are okay with the salary stated, and if there’s a clause to resignation where you are expected to give a notice one month prior to leaving, then it is expected they give you one month before resumption so you could also properly retire from your former employer.

Due diligence is important.

You stated it there in your post. Thorough due diligence about the new offer and the organization. Guess, Manager position was the topic sentence. She didn't know she was going to Manage many things including poor erratic salary. She shouldn't also have resigned just like that. Should have given excuse at old place and compared both jobs for few months before making up her mind. Who resigns at a job without offer letter in new place? Hasty climbers have sudden fall.

When it comes to contract and employment terms one needs to be very careful.

If you are not careful, you will become a slave to your employers. Take your time, calm down and go through your terms of employment, and make sure you ask questions.

Another thing I notice is that somany don't know the difference between net salary and gross salary.

You already have your answer in the question.

1. Due diligence
2. Offer letter

Two things not to joke with whether in job searching or doing a viability study to start a new business.

The best form of education is skill acquisition..

We have this mentality of looking down on those dirty auto-mechanics, trading apprentices, phone technicians, brick layers, truck drivers, hairdressers, tailors, etc …

in the end, they don’t go about looking for jobs, they create jobs and employ people.

I was had a guy celebrating he's got a bigger pay job in a new establishment.... Although I congratulated him but I have to ask him these questions,.... This new place you are going to, what's your job security and what's your job consistency and continuity?

There's one thing with offering you big salary or position but is it consistent? Will they pay you salary for one month and owe you for the next four months.....?
It's very important people ask these questions in the process of job switch

One thing that comes to mind is that Shade Defoe her many years of experience is ignorant. Why resign a job without an offer letter stating the salary and benefits you get?

Apparently, she was more concerned about the title and relied too much on verbal promises.

The learning point here is kearn to have a signed contract and read through every line to be sure it is well understood before agreeing to it.

You said it.

Two words: Due. Diligence.

Always check out the place you're going before you take the leap.

Prepare for the worst case scenario, ask yourself if it compares better than where you currently are.

That said, Ṣadé should embrace her new reality, suck it in, and face her job while looking for opportunities.

.
Always ask and have your employment letter with you before starting any job. That's what make you an employee in the first place. Only desperate and ignorant people start work without a written binding agreement or documentation
