Atiku Attacks Premium Times For Requesting His Academic Records by Bobloco: 3:11am On Dec 10, 2023
After ignoring PREMIUM TIMES' request for his academic records for two months, Atiku reacted by pouring invective on the newspaper within a few hours of publishing the report of his non-disclosure on Saturday.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, on Saturday, resorted to pouring invective on PREMIUM TIMES over the newspaper’s request for his academic records and subsquent report on his failure to release them.

Atiku, through his media aide, Paul Ibe, reacted in a statement only few hours after the story was published on Saturday.

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the last election had ignored this newspaper’s request for over two months.

PREMIUM TIMES first made the request in a letter dated 3 October, and when he did not respond after seven weeks, sent a reminder to him on 13 November. His media adviser, Mr Ibe, assured of a prompt response, making PREMIUM TIMES to wait further for almost four weeks before publishing Saturday’s report.

For the period after this newspaper sent the reminder, Mr Ibe and his principal made no comment on the issue until Saturday when they baselessly accused the newspaper of a witch-hunt.

PREMIUM TIMES reported on Saturday his refusal to release his records as requested.

The report contrasted his attitude with his dogged pursuit of the academic records of President Bola Tinubu to as far as the United States a few months ago.

Atiku, claiming to be driven by his commitment to public probity and accountability, sent lawyers to the U.S. to have a court to compel the Chicago State University to release Mr Tinubu’s academic records.

Our report also drew parallels between Atiku’s attitude and former U.S. President Donald Trump’s prevarication, dodging the requests by UK Guardian newspaper for his birth records as he had earlier demanded of his predecessor, then President Barack Obama.

Reacting to PREMIUM TIMES report on Saturday, Atiku said the newspaper had no right to conduct an enquiry into his records which he said was neither controversial nor shrouded in secrecy.

Atiku, instead of responding to why he had failed to provide the documents, accused the newspaper of mischief and unprofessionalism.

He also claimed that the story was “fictional”.

“Without adherence to any known ethics of journalism, the Premium Times newspaper went into its mill to publish a story that is neither controversial nor shrouded in a cover-up,” Mr Ibe, wrote in a statement sent to PREMIUM TIMES Saturday.

Atiku claimed that all the documents requested were in the public and that the newspaper should instead request them from the electoral commission, INEC, and the institutions where he claimed to have graduated from.

“Atiku is an alumnus of both Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and the Anglia Ruskin University in the United Kingdom. Premium Times did not place an order for Atiku’s academic records with these reputable institutions, nor did Atiku stop the school or go to court to ask any of these schools not to release his records. Premium Times is also at liberty to write to the West African Examination Council (WAEC) demanding for a copy of the former Vice President’s certificate and transcript.”

Against expectation that he would want to prove that the PREMIUM TIMES’ request was baseless, Atiku did not accompany his statement with the requested documents on Saturday.

He baselessly accused the newspaper of protecting the interest of the Tinubu administration.

He said: “The ethics of journalism seeks to establish the truth when there is a dispute about it or when there is a deliberate cover-up that inhibits public interest.

“What the Premium Times has done in this case keeps faith in neither of these two precepts. The story in reference by Premium Times is nothing other than witch-hunt – and a callous one at that.

“Were the publishers of the Premium Times stable interested in the truth, it would have been more honourable for them to start their busybody foray into politicians’ academic records by interrogating the discoveries from the Chicago State University. They certainly refrained from that engagement for the obvious reason that a parent owner of the newspaper occupies a critical seat in the current government.

“And, then, we ask the question: What manner of a newspaper sets out to protect the interest of a government but is very willing to embark on a wild goose chase on a private citizen?”

PREMIUM TIMES challenges Atiku to name ‘parent owner’ in govt.

Meanwhile, PREMIUM TIMES has challenged Atiku to name its “parent owner” he claimed to be serving in the President Tinubu administration.

“Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar should be bold enough to name the person he claimed to be a parent owner of our newspaper that occupies a critical seat in the current government. We dare him to name the person,” the Editor-in-Chief of PREMIUM TIMES, Musikilu Mojeed, said in reaction to Atiku’s baseless claim on Saturday.

“It is unfortunate that at his level, he can make an allegation of this nature publicly without any proof whatsoever. Much more is expected from people aspiring to lead a country like Nigeria.”

This year, the former Vice President sent his lawyers to the United States to legally force Chicago State University (CSU) to release the academic records of President Tinubu, whose election he disputed but lost in court.

He who comes to equity must come with clean hands. Entitlement mentality has beclouded some people from seeing issues from the right perspective.

I don't know when these people will show a level of intelligence in their thinking. Atiku went to the US and obtained the certificate Tinubu claims he has. What APC needs to do is to approach WAEC to obtain his original certificate and take him to court like he did to Tinubu. Ranting on social media I think will not help them.

APC and co. should know that Nigerians can't be fooled by any. At the moment they should be thinking about how they will defend the shame they brought on Nigerians rather than managing shameless thinking they will cause a distraction.

Atiku is 100% right.

They had a plethora of options in getting and verifying the documents requested.

All the documents they talked about, are in the public domain, with INEC, and the the bomboklaats could get them with a simple FOI request, and then move on to verify them.

They did none of that, but rushed to publish a sensational report on Atiku.

Atiku did not write to Tinubu to provide his results. He simply took what Tinubu submitted to the public, and went to verify. Tinubu actively began blocking the verification efforts which led Atiku to court, and the rest is history.

The report by PT is shameful. That's not journalism.

Information about our leaders should not be a thing of secret. It's shameful that the nation has to go through what we went through to get basic information about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
And these are people who called themselves Leaders, yet we don't know them

Premium Times should be exact on whose record they want. Is it records for Atiku Abubakar? or Saddiq/Sadiq Abubakar?. It's obvious that Atiku Abubakar has no known academic record but a certain Saddiq Abubakar whom they now claimed metamorphosised to Atiku Abubakar has some crude primary and secondary school records.
My question is, how can a man be born Atiku, then changed his name to Sadiq which is on his certificate, then after school changed back again to Atiku. Is he a masquerade? Who is fooling who?

Did PT report the developments on the certificate issues of Tinubu? Did they share their opinion on the Chicago court depositions? Did they report about the issue of "irreparable damage" as claimed by Tinubu,if his details are released ?

They didn't even interrogate sufficiently the issues as it relates to Tinubu.

If they have issues with Atiku's credentials, they should state it or they should just shut up and get out!

Nigerians don’t care about any of these anymore. Atiku is not their president. Atiku didn’t sponsor hundreds of delegates to cop28 with billions of naira

Anytime any news of PO or Atiku comes online from APC propaganda media, remind who’s president and who should be doing the explaining

Premium Times in this matter, is utterly shameless. If not lazy journalism, go and get your facts from the sources Atiku provided you. Working for Tinubu and you have the gut to ask Atiku to name your 'parent owner'?

Atiku has no reason whatsoever to attack anyone for this because this is exactly what he used against his political rival, president Bola Ahmed Tinubu. So he should therefore present his academic records simple and short. Do to others what you want men to be done to you. I dey laugh 😆😃

Atiku spent millions to get Tinubu's academic records, time to release his own, he's writing long essay.

Everyone should relax, towards 2027 if God spear our lives, Atiku and Obi records will be properly scrutinized, the President will go for their jugulars.

Atiku has 4 different names on his document, Obi has 3 different names, they will explain in court why they changed names like a woman that had been in 50 different marriages.

Most of the politicians are birds of the same feathers with skeletons in their cupboards. What is the difficulty in releasing the document when you have them? Why should the newspaper go to the various institutions when you can supply what it needs?
The paper should dig deeper and expose hidden things in his records if there is any.

Atiku as a President would be a terrible dictator. No wonder Nigerians keep rejecting him every 4 years.

The man can't take half of what he dishes out.

What exactly is Siddiq Kojoli hiding?
