Nigeria’s “mami Wata” Misses Out On 2024 Oscars’ International Feature Film List by UncleSnr(m): 10:17pm On Dec 23, 2023 |
Nigeria’s aspirations for an Oscar win in the International Feature Film category at the 2024 Academy Awards have been dashed as its entry, “Mami Wata,” failed to secure a spot on the coveted shortlist. The Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC) had fervently chosen “Mami Wata,” a film that previously garnered accolades at the Sundance Festival, as its contender for the 96th Academy Awards’ International Feature Film category. However, the film fell short when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the shortlisted films from 15 countries. The shortlisted films, hailing from diverse regions, include “The Monk and the Gun” from Bhutan, “Amerikatsi” from Armenia, “The Promised Land” from Denmark, “The Taste of Things” from France, “Fallen Leaves” from Finland, “The Teachers’ Lounge” from Germany, “Godland” from Iceland, “Perfect Days” from Japan, “Io Capitano” from Italy, “Totem” from Mexico, “The Mother of All Lies” from Morocco, “Four Daughters” from Tunisia, “Society of Snow” from Spain, “20 Days in Mariupol” from Ukraine, and “The Zone of Interest” from the United Kingdom. The 96th Oscars, scheduled for Sunday, March 10, 2024, will be globally broadcasted from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation, Hollywood, reaching audiences in over 200 territories worldwide. https://mediatalkafrica.com/138876/nigerias-mami-wata-misses-out-on-2024-oscars-international-feature-film-shortlist/ 2 Likes

Nollywood can't win international awards. When they start making visually stunning movies, then they have a chance. Most of their films depend on story, when the story is bad then the movie is wack unlike Hollywood and other movie industry that visuals alone carry the movie. 3 Likes |

Nigeria have good actors and actresses but bad script writers, i think the visual effects are also not good enough. The story of most Nigerian movies is not deep enough, it is sometimes too predictable. I can't blame them though because most Nigerians don't enjoy movies with more depth to it unless you are a Nigerian that's already a fan of Hollywood tv series and Korean series. They only like comedies with some actions, reason why the skit industry is booming in Nigeria. 2 Likes 1 Share |

tuzle:No such thing as international movie award. Movie making is arts and arts is culture. Culture itself is clime-specific. Nollywood movie should never be rated with Hollywood standard. Hollywood movies like you rightly noted are more of visual entertainment while in nollywood, it is story based. Old nollywood producers were very creative storytellers, they only needed to develop in cinematography. Instead, however, the so called new ones out of inferiority complex started pursuing Hollywood standard and awards and abandoned storytelling. This is why most nollywood fans will tell nollywood movies these days are crap, despite the producers themselves claiming the industry has improved. 3 Likes 1 Share |
