Cheap/labor Exploitation: My Experience With Mamaland Foods LTD, 45 Days, No Pay by emdis: 1:28pm On Dec 31, 2023
First of all, I'll begin by making major highlights about Mamaland Foods Limited, with a known address in Abuja, Nigeria. Then, I'll proceed to share every detail of communication with screenshots and transcripts of evidence, including both chats and phone conversation records, as well as the purported contract they gave me and tricked me into signing. I reserve the right to share all these informations because I'm not obligated to keep them confidential, as I didn't sign any NDA.

Secondly, I have taken my time out to expose Mamaland Foods Limited to save other job seekers from similar exploitation happening within Nigeria. I was informed that someone holding the position of IT specialist also left the company hastily. This will prevent other job seekers from falling victim, at least to this particular company.

Meanwhile, my lawyer is already on the matter, carrying out an investigation into the workplace of the company owner and the exact home address. This is to enable us to make highly effective legal moves. I would still be open to more legal advice at the end of the thread. I will update this thread every night until I reach the end.

The company owner is believed to be residing in the USA. It's worrisome that someone who enjoys substantial wage pays from the USA and understands how strict USA labor laws are, along with their consequences against labor exploitation, would take advantage of Nigeria's weak labor laws. However, the product I was working on is meant for USA consumers, so we can initiate some legal proceedings from the USA as well.

Most Employers in Nigeria are not trying. They dont have any good plans for their workers. delay payments, toxic workin enviroment, exploitation(enforcing extra tasks that are not in workers job description), extended working hours... If you are an employer and you offer the above, all your staffs will jump at every chance to steal from you... even the ones you think are good with time they will steal from you.

It all started on the 28th day of October 2023 when I received this mail.. you can see, the title of the mail clearly stated "graphic designer opportunity" I replied to the mail and got talking with the company via WhatsApp, the company head asked me if I have experience in packaged design and infographics, I said for infographics, nope to package designs but I can design very well, I haven't done package design, simply because I have never gotten a gig in package design. he requested for my best designs of any kind and I forwarded same. He then sent me some high quality aesthetic package design samples some from Pinterest. I said I can recreate those just fine for his products.. He told me before I get on the team, he will give me a paid assignment to design two package design and infographics for their products. He said paid so I obliged, dropped all I was doing and started the work, did a couple of research, got more resources and dedicated my next 48hours to deliver. (Note: He hasnt mentioned to me the salary or what was to be paid, but told me, working for their company is same as working for an American company, and assured me the company will change my life) I made one design using one of the sample and one infographic, in Photoshop and went onto Adobe after-effect to animate the entire project with a presentation kind of a company product introduction ads.. I delivered the project and he said he likes it and I could improve later.. moving on, he said he will mail me my job description.. that was the first red flag. The job description completely was a different one to that of a graphic designer and he told me the salary was 30,000 naira per month.. I quickly rejected via a chat and he called me, thank God I recorded the call, he tried to convince me that all the listed tasks are same but I said nope, not at all, he then said, my job would be only graphic design and product listing for that salary for now, I should just sign the contract (I will attach the job description here too)

Yes but it's strange coming from someone who lives in USA and enjoy all labor entitlements

At a point I have employed some people to do some manual work for me. I always ensure they wait and collect their money. I was working as a supervisor then.

I don't know how someone will work over 15days for you and not pay the person. How do you get a peace of mind

Here are copies of the purported Mamaland Foods Ltd., job description I was made to sign for a salary of 30, 000 niara that was not intended to be paid... i rejected the offer but he assured me, for a salary of 30k NGN I would be working on their products labels design only... next I will share the terms of the contract in which the company couldn't honor. their own contract was violated by them first..

Re: Cheap/labor Exploitation: My Experience With Mamaland Foods LTD, 45 Days, No Pay by emdis: 8:31pm On Jan 01
As interpreted by my lawyer. the own me 45 days working wage and another 30, 000 for terminating their contract without a month notice because i asked for my salary..

(Next thread) would focus on detailed conversations, tasks I did and how i submitted to them (an entire folder archive of 700 MB in size). They asked for them all after terminating my contract without any entitlements.

#30k/month or #300k/month?

How do you accept a job offer for #30k/month in todays Nigeria, with your skillset?

If you send out 500 proposals on Upwork etc per month, you will have enough clients/projects to earn you 10 times that pay.

Dont do this to yourself, they sensed your desperation and capitalized on it.

Sorry about your experience.

Thank you for the advice, but one needs to purchase connects in dollar's to be able to send out proposals.. they never mentioned the salary from the beginning..by the time I received this offer, I have spent lots of resources and time on their assessment project.. still, I rejected the offer but he convinced me with lots of promises and reduced the workload over the phone, not on the paper..

For example, I know someone who got a $15k gig just by approaching the CTO of a European Tech Coy on Twitter and selling their skills (sounds unbelievable to some but it's true). It doesn't have to be Upwork, it can even be Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin, do you need to pay for that too?

There are opportunities around you, if you can demonstrate your skillset, you won't lack work.

The only thing standing in between you and better offers is yourself.

I signed the contract on the 7th of November 2023, was introduced to the what'sapp group chat like an induction on the 12th of November.. by the head of the company know as jibreel Damisa (the person that also recruited me) he told me they have an IT guy that would be sending me tasks.. Indeed be sent my first task as shown below on the 13th. The task was without any specific name and I asked for more informations. It took him 24hours to provide me partial answers.. I sent them a draft of what I was asked to do on the 15th..
Same day Mr jibreel called me and yelled at me that I took long, I told him it was not my fault as I was waiting for more as regards the product info from the person he assigned me to work under. After he said I must report to him directly from that time on.
I delivered the final design on the 18th Nov. He told me its good but he may suggest a few modifications after he may have hear from he's partners cox he forwarded it to them... I asked for data allowance cox I had spent lots of my data already on research and getting of raw resources cox he asked .e to research on the best products before working on Their's.. he first said data was free in Nigeria, he then send me a link to download a VPN, I just laughed over it. He later said he was joking and asked someone to send me 5k data allowance. I received the allowance and wait for his response from the partners..

I have asked to make promotion or teasing posts for social media but they rejected that they don't want that. Until their products come to the market..
After a week. He told me the agency for copyright had rejected the names for that designed so he sent me new designs for new names. But after a week before I could deliver on that work. He said even the new names were rejected.. I had worked on nearly 6 labels withore than 5 infographics and other contents which some were all not delivered yet..
When it was 30 days he stopped responding to my messages frequently like before. After 36 days I asked him if the company was under financial crisis. He called me and told the company was not under financial crisis and then he started yelling at me again that I did nothing, infact he's a very busy man if I don't have any thing to say he's cutting the call.he cut the call and I messaged him on Whatsapp repeatedly, he didn't responded. I mailed them that instead of salary he should tell me the total work he expected me to do before I could be qualified to collect one month salary. So I ll deliver it all for just one salary buy No response at all.. I later told him on Whatsapp that what's the essence of the contract i signed voc he had set the contract aside. No response.

After a few more days, making it 45 days in total they sent me a termination letter and requesting I submit all folders in my possession. Probably the work I did for them without being paid.. immediately I gathered all of it.a total of 750 megabytes I'm size before being compressed. Uploaded to Google drive and sent them the link to download and asked for my entitlements but no response til date..
