The Defence Headquarters has said the Christmas Eve attacks across communities in Plateau State that left close to 200 dead, many injured and many displaced were planned to embarrass and make the Federal Government look stupid.



The killings marked the seventh month of Mr Tinubu’s assumption of office as President.

“The shocking incident that occurred in Bokkos, Barkin Ladi was quite unfortunate. There was no reason for the attack,” the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, said in an interview with Channels TV on Monday.

He said, “I think the purpose is to embarrass everybody and to make the government look stupid.”

Mr Musa added that Nigerian military was “making some arrests” connected to the Plateau Christmas Eve killings and explained the military’s delayed response to the distress calls from the attacked villages

Last week Monday, Peoples Gazette reported that over 112 were killed and 47 injured as armed herdsmen in coordinated attacks wreaked havoc on at least 12 communities spanning Barkin Ladi and Bokkos council areas on Christmas Eve. But the number of casualties has increased to over 195 since then as more bodies were recovered.

President Bola Tinubu has condemned the killings, ordering provision of relief materials for survivors. Vice President Kashim Shettima also visited Plateau State with some government officials to condole with families of victims.

In his New Year message, Mr Tinubu left out the Christmas Eve attack in Plateau, claiming that security had improved since he assumed office in May.

However, Amnesty International condemned the attacks, berating Mr Tinubu for failing to protect communities in the state and Nigeria at large.

There are thousands of Gumis. Because they don't make offensive noise, similar to the Gumi you know, does not make them less of a threat.

Terrorism is a fluid movement in the North, capable of replicating itself, and not an abuse of power by individuals as many Nigerians like to believe.

The lasting solution against fundamentalist terror is the provision of a comprehensive and holistically effective security architecture that will be independent and able to stop terror in its track.

That security architecture will have to compartmentalise and vest important powers in autonomous regional units otherwise it goes nowhere if, for example, under a shot-caller like Buhari.

We saw so many examples of this with how Fulanis herdsmen raided, looted,destroyed and killed wantonly throughout the South under Buhari yet we fail to see what is obvious to still be talking today about Gumi etal.

Painful reality, if Nigerians are paying attention, should have taught us that he solution is to give others the power to protect themselves optimally against marauders that no powerful political bias or Office can compromise as Buhari used the Presidency to do.

The massacre in Plateau would not have happened if political power has not deliberately rendered the middle belts and all regions of Nigeria waiting -to-die 'sitting Ducks' so that there is never a level playing field to combat terror from Northern bandits and savage herdsmen who are small in number and would be no threat at all to an organised, fully-empowerd and mobilised regional security apparatus.

Take a clue at how Malami and Buhari tried hard to frustrate the birth of Amotekun, with Aketi (RIP) standing against them strongly, to know what we are facing.

Note also that USA and the West remain relatively lukewarm to our 'fight' against terrorism because they know what is really going on and fully understand terrorist have infiltrated the highest level of Nigerian governance , army, immigration etal to then be able to protect themselves from within and sabotage any effort to bring them to book.

So long as our overarching security architecture has a 'one Nigeria' spine then terror will always win and grow stronger.
