In Ugep, Yakurr LGA of Cross River State, Obtaining the Yam Title is seen as a way of counting your wealth.

No matter how rich you are, without obtaining the yam title, your riches doesn't count.


The Yam Title could be obtained by both men and women.

To get this title:
Women are to tie 200 sticks of Yam

While the men are to tie 400 sticks of Yam.


After that, there will be a big display and a huge celebration to celebrate your title and your wealth.


We took pictures of the tying of 400 sticks of Yam as the man (Nicknamed Baddest) is preparing to get the Ugep Yam Title.

Depends on the size of the Yam

Some are up to 25, others more than 30

In our culture, we count the sticks not the Yam.

You must tie up to 40 sticks of yam with extra sticks.

Counting the number of yams in a stick, the yams are more than 10,000 yams.
