I have come to the conclusion that the lack of maintenance of our public structures and institutions is deliberate. There is no money in steady maintenance for our government officials so they prefer to let these infrastructures decay before another huge pay out to repair what should have been easily kept running with steady maintenance.
.

It's not about maintenance. The stadium is idle and not being put to use

There’s NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT STADIUM.

A place that was refurbished a couple of years back!

Best way to renovate the stadium is to keep it busy

Get a team that would be playing NPFL matches every weekend.( Where is FC abuja by the way? Thought they were going up).

Rest of the week get it to host events. Charge as much money as possible..Even if is Baba Kunduga Under 5 national swimming championship host it.

All that raises revenue.

That is how London Olympic stadium is working. They host West Ham and then they do events.

Funnily enough National stadium does host some events.

This is apt!

But unfortunately, what we get here is selfish and greedy culture of civil servants. When people with this mindset comes, they will tax and bill them and this chases them away.

The average Nigerian wants a cut in everything. This affects investment in Nigeria and it is sad that people do not get to see how their greedy nature is affecting the growth and development of the country.

SHOW US THE ROT, LET US SEE!

OR IS IT THAT NONSENSE POSTED?

That stadium is nearly 25 years old. Why is he expecting it to look like Ivorian stadiums that were built last year? Has he ever heard of wear and tear?

The man is jobless and talking rubbish.

Put to use by who?

Is it government officials that will go and be playing sports there?

Did you tell them you want to host a tournament there and they said no?

If nobody has anything they want to do there, how is that the government’s fault?

And then when the place looks underused, you accuse the govt of “abandoning a $360 million stadium.”

So irritating.

That Sowore is just a useless fool.

I JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND NIGERIANS.

The government’s built a proper stadium in the capital for YOU.

Instead of you to look for ways to utilise the facility by organising sporting activities, you IGNORE the place, and naturally, it looks under-utilised, and then you attack the govt for “abandoning” the stadium!

You are sick people!

The sole purpose of that stadium was the settlement for those that brought OBJ to power. So, it seems

It has done its job. Let it rot.

On a more serious note, the government should concession it out. That would be the best policy.

Garbage.

What would concession do that cannot be done now, as far as sporting activities are concerned?

It would it even make things worse, and make it less attractive for doing anything due to the higher costs the concessionaire will charge for activities there.

The stadium is a public facility. If you people cannot organise sporting activities there for next to nothing by way of fees, then you are hopeless and should stop complaining.

The facilities there are WORKING, including the velodrome.

What stops you from organising cycling contests in the velodrome?

Nothing!

Or swimming competitions?

Nothing!

Every day “govt this, govt that”.

It's not a bad idea. A club can use it as their stadium, and it doesn't limit Super Eagles from playing on the stadium

I remember when I left Unilag and I and my partner had this brilliant idea that would help transform Lagos state. I was introduced to a politician who could assist us push it to the then governor, Bola Tinubu.

I spoke at length with that politician about the benefits of the project to the state but I observed he seemed uninterested.

Then I mentioned how he could benefit and his face lit up. At the end of the day,all he cared about was how he could benefit from the project rather than the gains to the state and masses.

Many foreign investors are frustrated by greedy officials who prevent them from coming in.

You're a fantasist. You know nothing about the country you live in. You think politicians or government officials care about the people they serve? I won't even be surprised if adequate subvention is provided by government for the upkeep of the stadium but it is instead diverted into private bank accounts through inflated and non-existing contracts.

So because it is a public facility, things should be cheap? What is the point of running events if they do not cover costs? Events put exert pressure on facility and yet should not provide enough returns to maintain the place?

Tarawa Balewa Square in Onikan, Lagos is concessioned and well run. The facility is in excellent shape. It is weird

For your info, many organized events such as the swimming competitions you mentioned are usually heavily subsidized. The organizers most often are not dependent on gate fees but on their corporate sponsors. The organizers often have to spend massively to create aware, so you emphasis on cheap misses the reality. These events in the first place atent cheap to organize as you imagine since you demand cheap ticket

The stadium can also make enormous amounts of money if used for music shows. Imagine a sold out stadium for a Wizkid show.

If the government has proven to be a bad manager, why retain it in their hands? Yeah, govt this, govt that

While you are right that the London Olympic stadium makes money by hosting West Ham and other events, the stadiun consistently runs at a loss. It has lost well over £40 million in the last two years. It is unlikely that they would be able to charge as much money as possible as it would be unaffordable for most users. The world over, there are big stadia built for specific events which turn out to be white elephant projects. I doubt that Abuja has the demographic to turn that stadium to a roaring success commercially.

We are blessed with awarding new contracts for new projects at inflated costs but when it comes to maintening such edifices, "apology" is our name.

We need a revival in this wise.

This and other sports facilities in the country owned by the government should be concessioned to private entities for effective and efficient management.
The football facilities should be sold to private companies so that they can improve the amenities and maintain the properties. We have horrible maintenance culture and everything owned by the government, people see as their rights to it. Because I live half of the year in America, I see how football stadiums are owned by a combination of local government and private enterprises. Sofi stadium, AT@T, even the stadium here is called FedEx Field. If the government start using money to build, rebuild or maintain a stadium, masses will complain that that money is best suited for roads, palliatives and for the poor.

Like in Imo state. Two sports stadiums worth billions of Naira in Orlu were abandoned to rot in the last four years by the gov of Imo state. Reasons: the stadiums are not in the gov's hometown;
the gov was in a bitter senate election struggle with the former gov who built the first stadium in his hometown; the gov is political rivalry with the second gov who built the second stadium in Orlu.

The stadiums were built in memory of Sam Okwaraji.
