The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned former Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, on nine counts of alleged N4bn fraud during his time as governor of the South-East state from March 2014 to March 2022.

The 68-year-old was arraigned today (Wednesday) before Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court Abuja.

Obiano pleaded not guilty for the money laundering charges levelled against him.

The prosecution said he has 14 witnesses lined up to testify against the former governor.

On his part, counsel for the EFCC, Sylvanus Tahir, asked that he be remanded in the custody of the anti-graft agency.

Obiano is currently on administrative bail granted him by the EFCC, which includes providing two sureties who are directors in civil service, own landed properties in Abuja.

Justice Ekwo adopted the administrative bail and added that Obiano remains within Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and travel documents be summited to the court going forward.

The court also stated that the immigration be alerted that all travel documents are with the court.

Shortly after he handed over power to Governor Chukwuma Soludo in Marhc 2022, the EFCC had arrested Obiano at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport, Lagos on his way out of the country to Houston, Texas in the United States.

Channels Television had reported last November how the EFCC had placed Obiano on a watchlist. The EFCC later granted Obiano bail after five days in detention whilst the anti-graft commission continued the probe of the ex-governor.

The watery case is clearly a witch hunt. Governor Willie Obiano 21/21 will be exonerated. APGA is solidly with him as you can see the national chairman of our party is there to support him. Wole Olanipekun SAN is his lead counsel and Anambra state will offer him free residence at the Anambra House in Abuja till the Malami-inspired witch hunt is dismissed.

Hehehe.

I knew this is efforts in futility.

Politicians always come through for their fellow looters. They understand the game,if this guy go down, most of them should be expecting their downfall.

The only way out is to support him, then their own loot will be safe.

The only looser I see here are the common Nigerians. They will never unite like politicians do,to fight their common enemies (looters). Instead, they fight each other.

How they even defend these politicians on empty stomach, baffles me grin.

In as much as am happy that Obiano is being called to account for his stewardship, I will totally frown an this selective fight against corruption.

The present APC chairman in the person of Ganduje who was caught on camera collecting bribe, is yet to be invited by the EFCC. If EFCC is not going to be holistic in its fight against corruption then it should.forget about it.

How many years later, they've not seen a single dent on Peter Obi, yet some cursed APC stray dogs will open mouth and criticise him

I'm now smart enough to know that all these EFCC paparazzi is just to make gullible Nigerians feel they are working. Nonsense. Steal 20 billlion, EFCC makes whole lot of noise and invites you, you return 10 billi, granted bail and that's all.
