The group asked President Bola Tinubu to reverse fuel subsidy removal regime as Nigerians are suffering from extreme poverty and hardship.

Agroup of 45 civil society organisations working in various fields of human endeavour in Kano State and beyond have expressed deep concerns with the economic hardship faced by Nigerians, particularly the impact on the underprivileged.

The group asked President Bola Tinubu to reverse fuel subsidy removal regime as Nigerians are suffering from extreme poverty and hardship.

The group said they believe that the recent removal of fuel subsidy is a major contributing factor to the hardship, among other multifactorial reasons.

According to the group, “Since the removal of the fuel subsidies, social unrest, poverty and inflation have been on the rise aggressively.

“Living standards of the underprivileged Nigerians who are the majority are massively falling. Costs of food, education and healthcare which are the necessities of life are almost unattainable for the average Nigerian.”

The group in a statement issued on Saturday said that “Studies have shown that since the removal of fuel subsidies, transportation fares have shot up by over 200%.

“More families are experiencing unbearable hardship; children are crying massively because of hunger, and millions of parents weep profusely every day at their children’s despair.

“According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) report in 2023, inflation for May 2023 increased by 4.70% compared to May 2022.

“Additionally, the month-on-month inflation rate for May 2023 was 0.03% higher than in April 2023. On the other hand, the food inflation rate of 24.82% in May rose to 25.25% and 26.98% at the end of June and July, respectively. This trend indicates that the removal of subsidies has contributed to a persistent rise in inflation and food rates.

“Unfortunately, the social cushioning and protection measures by the government more recently have been marred with alleged corruption while short-changing the potential beneficiaries who ideally are the poor Nigerians.

“In light of this, we urgently call upon President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to without delay return fuel subsidies and also rescind other anti-poor policies within the next two weeks.

“Failing this, the group is prepared to stage a mega protest to voice the collective concerns of the citizens affected by these ill-timed policies.”

The group emphasised the importance of policies that prioritize the well-being of all Nigerians, especially the most vulnerable.

It maintained that “The return of fuel subsidies and the review of anti-poor policies are crucial steps towards alleviating the economic burden on the citizens.

“We urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the relevant authorities to engage in constructive dialogue and take swift action to address these pressing issues.

“The Group remains committed to advocating for the rights and welfare of the people and will continue to pursue peaceful and impactful means to achieve these objectives.”

If he brings the fuel subsidy back. Fuel won't sell less than 300 naira. There is no need. The man just scattered economy in less than one year.

Clowns, he should reverse it and start paying 400billion naira monthly into the pockets of a few subsidy hyenas. Tinubu is not directly responsible for the hunger you going through, successive governments that refused to fix the refineries but watch it rot away while they line the pockets of their cronies with billions of subsidy. If there's any time to weather the storm, it is now that refineries are gradually coming back up.

Where is Wole Soyinka?

He has suddenly gone numb again like he did during the time of his Ruga master Buhari. Since his kinsman snatched & ran away with a stolen mandate, he has found his voice but attacking sane Nigerians who mean well for the country.

Wole Soyinka is a disgrace to the intellectual World. He is a slippery tongue twisting psycopath who is now silent in the face of the economic, social and security threat imposed by his kinsman Tinubu.

I can’t forget the role he played at ojota. Allah will surely punish that wicked soul Soyinka

They said the subsidy regime was fraught with corruption - TRUE

Is it so impossible to remove corruption from the fuel subsidy scheme that we had to throw both the baby and bath water away?

Asiwaju should have tried to extricate the corrupt practices in the subsidy regime before he "courageously" went off script to announce that "fuel subsidy is gone"

See how the combo of fuel subsidy removal and floating of the naira has wrecked incalculable damage on the economy and severely impoverished the people.

Please don't reverse it. According to the zombie supporters of Obi, Tinubu and Atiku, the savings from subsidy would be used to transform Nigeria to Dubai. Only Sowore and the SDP presidential candidate were pro-subsidy and had a heart for the masses in the last presidential elections. The others were IMF puppets.

We told the supporters of fuel subsidy removal that this is the worst thing that would happen to Nigeria. Some even supported it under Jonathan, now they're wailing. I didn't support it under Jonathan and I didn't support it under Tinubu, it didn't matter if you were my candidate.
They hoodwinked them by constantly telling them that some cabals were the beneficiaries of the subsidy, cabals with no names grin grin grin. At least, Nigerians too were benefiting from the subsidies. Now, every single naira gained from the subsidy removal goes to the FG, SGs and LGs while masses are battling with hyper inflation, eroding purchasing power, unemployment/under employment plus hopelessness

Bring fuel back to N200 can't solve anything. Inflation fire has been ignited. Dollar at N1500 will mean FG has to pay quadruple the old subsidy and not pay salaries.
