The House of Representatives has resolved to stop sports betting in the country and urged the National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC) to comply with the Lottery Regulatory Commission Act, 2005.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion by Rep. Kelechi Nwogu (PDP-Rivers) at plenary in Abuja on Thursday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) had earlier reported that approximately 60 million Nigerians aged between 18 and 40 engage in sports betting.

According to him, weak or neglected regulations of sports betting have given rise to mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, and addiction.

Nwogu added that it had also led to strain or broken relationships due to lying or stealing from friends and family, financial problems, legal issues, and job loss due to excessive loss or debt.

“Betting has given rise to an increased crime rate and eventual suicide,” he said.

He harped on the need for campaigns to prevent the negative social impact of lottery and underage participation.

Adopting the motion, the House urged the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation to conduct a comprehensive nationwide campaign to raise public awareness about the negative impact of youth participation in sports betting.

The House also mandated the Committee on Inter-governmental Affairs to conduct a public hearing on the dangerous effects of sports betting in Nigeria.

It urged the committee to report back to it within four weeks for further legislative action.

NAN reports that data from the National Lottery Trust Fund (NLTF) has revealed that over 65 million Nigerians actively engage in betting, spending an average of 15 dollars daily.

NAN reports that Nigerians spend an estimated 975 million dollars daily on online sports betting, which amounts to about 356 billion dollars annually. (NAN)

Same betting that gives both the old and young hope under failed APC.

Some people legit use betting to feed their wards, as this useless government has refused to create jobs.

Take that away and see how fast the country burns.

Gambling has its own down side but this is not the right time to take it away from the millions whom It gives hope.

This Government I'd jut trying so hard to bring up an uprising on themselves.

It shall be well.

Good move!

Better still, impose HEAVY tax on it. Winner should be paying 40% of their winnings as tax.

They are about to make it lucrative. Any because casinos/gambling don't create wealth. They impoverish their local communities and do not support local businesses. All they do is siphon money off of the masses while offering nothing except addiction and a gambling high that wrecks peoples' finances and personal lives.

In the light because of the above I support it

We have looters, certificate forgers, retired thieves and drug dealers in power. They are stealing money on daily basis and they still think they have any moral right to tell others what is right or wrong

Lol. The hope that you can almost become a millionaire and you will definitely be millionaire one day is enough to calm people down when day dreaming. But to take that away can lead to hopelessness and crime in return.

Sport betting cannot be ban or stop.

Virtual and others casino can be regulated as that is heavily manipulated. but live sport don’t go there.

Nigeria is not the only African country gambling. Its not the problem of Nigerians falling economy
