The Fish Inferno: This is caused by industrial pollution. It happens when factories discharged untreated effullent into the rivers or seas. The discharged untreated water used by industries is very harmful due to large concentration of chemicals. Some decades ago, this was happening annually here in Kano state during the early raining season when factories especially the tanneries, located at two areas, namely Sharada and challawa, discharge the contaminated water they used into River Kano. Whenever that happens, dead fish wash off on the river banks in several towns and villages. Locals have a Hausa name for it: "gobarar kifi." In a layman language, "gobara" means inferno, while "kifi" is Hausa term for fish. To put it in a simpler term, the phenomenon is known as the "fish inferno." My opinion: This is not a miracle as many earlier claimed. Actually it's a crime and also an animal cruelty, to discharge untreated, hazardous water into large bodies of water which, after from killing marine lives, would contaminated the source of drinking water, irrigation farming, etc. But in places where hunger and poverty became part and parcel of daily life, people look at poison as a food. 1 Like 1 Share |

You are thinking only how lucky those around the area might be, think of the cause. Maybe is a chemical reaction and could be dangerous to the health. Don't be surprised to hear the after effect. |

Sardines move in huge 'schools'( numbers). These schools can reach thousands and usually occur in deep water. It's obvious this school lost its way and ended up on the beach. |
