The management of the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, has expelled 14 students over alleged misconduct and involvement in examination malpractices.

The university’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Kunle Akogun, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.

The names of nine of the expelled students were published in the weekly bulletin of the university which was released by the Information Unit of the University’s Directorate of Corporate Affairs on Monday.

“The Vice Chancellor’s approval of their expulsion was sequel to the recommendations of the Students’ Disciplinary Committee at its 219th meeting held on Wednesday and Thursday, January 10 and 11, 2024 respectively,” the bulletin read.

Among those expelled were seven final-year students in various departments of the school while the rest two students were in the 300 and 100 levels respectively.

The expelled students included Lateef Lukman Olayemi, a 500-level Agriculture/Aquaculture and Fisheries student with Matric No:17/10AB029, Kuranga Abdulmuiz Olalekan, Agriculture/Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, a 500-level student with Matric No:17/10AC462 and Ogundijo Abdulmalik Akinkunmi, a final year student of CIS/Library and Information Science department with Matric No:20/52HJ070

The rest were Ashekun Oladiji Quadri a final year student in the department of CIS/Telecommunication Science Matric No:18/52HP025, Musa Mohammed Asus of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology/Electrical and Electronic Engineering with Matric No:16/30GC073 in 500 level, Ahmed Saddam Opeyemi of Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Materials and Metallurgical Engineering with Matric No:18/30GN082 in 500 Level: 500 and Ayinla JamiuOlaitan of the Faculty of Life Science and a 400 level student of the department of Zoology with Matric No:17/55EK068.

The others were Eqwudah Lucky Ojonumba of the Faculty of Education, department of Education /Adult and Primary Education Studies with Matric No:19/ 25PK049 and in 300 level as well as a 100 Level Student, Adebisi Janet Bosede, Faculty of: Arts, Linguistics and Nigerian Languages department with Matric No:21/15CB024 Level:100.

It may be that it gets the coverage to reach someone that will raise a concern, which will see them get some respite, rather than this capital penalty. 1‐2 sessions suspension is a bit soothing.

Most of them are final year students, while I do not not support cheating.... 2 yrs suspension should be enough....

A serving senator was caught on camera in a sex shop assaulting a lady and d senate didn't send him away for gross misconduct..

now you're mixing two things up... exam is not a test of intelligence, especially Nigerian exams, it only deals with your ability to memorize... it doesn't even determine if you understand it. when Albert Einstein was in school, his teachers looked down on him, some even cursed him. He had low grades, so they judged him by his grades... One thing about exam is that, you might have A1 all through the courses but you might not understand them, just know to how to cram... and it has been proved that, intelligent people or geniuses mostly lack the general ability to cram, they prefer to understand the subject being taught and the thing is most lecturers don't even understand the subjects they take... they just go online, download pdfs and send to the students...

take the same test you give the students to the lecturers, now change the question and let it come in different ways from the ones the teachers are familiar with, most will fail woefully... la cram la pour.. you would be surprised most cheated their way also to get their degrees.

the students in questions might have done what society would frown upon, but until the basis of the problem is tackled by hiring competent instructors or lecturers, the problem will persist because not all are good in cramming... when you're good in something, in 50 years time, you would still be able to do that thing...
