In the sixth century B.C., the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II invaded and besieged Jerusalem to stop the Egyptians from cutting off Babylonian trade routes to the eastern Mediterranean area known as the Levant.

During the time of the First Temple (1200–586 BC), King Solomon built the First Temple in 1000 BC. This was after King David took over Jerusalem and made it his centre. When King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon took over Jerusalem in 586 BC, he destroyed the Temple. King Zedekiah, the last king of Judah, ruled at this time. He chose to stop paying taxes to the Babylonian Empire, even though they had put him in power. Nebuchadnezzar 11 laid siege to Jerusalem and destroyed the Kingdom of Judah, which took about a year. This was his way of punishing the rebels.
