Senate President Godswill Akpabio says some of the street protests against the rising cost of living in the country are sponsored.

There have been pockets of protests in different parts of the country, with the latest on Monday in Ibadan, capital city of Oyo state.

Residents had also taken to the streets of Niger, Kano and Sokoto states to protest the prevailing economic hardship.

Inflation has spiralled in Nigeria since President Bola Tinubu ended the subsidy on petrol and unified the exchange rate in 2023.

Speaking on the floor of the upper legislative chamber on Tuesday, Akpabio said the protesters are not aware of the efforts made by the senate and the federal government to tackle the situation.

“You can see a lot of sponsored protests here and there but those people are not aware — most of those sponsored protesters are not aware of the kind of efforts made by this senate to tackle the situation together with the management team of the federal government,” he said.

“Unverified reports have it that state governments in the last few months have received additional N30 billion from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), outside their normal allocations from the federation account, to assist them in ameliorating the food situation.

“So we believe that every state government should utilise the funds received towards ensuring that food is available.”

The senate president said the national assembly will not approve anything that would not benefit the citizens

So this man is saying there's no suffering in the land? I blame the masses who cheers these thieves. In a sane country Akpabio will be tendering his resignation letter by now.

Dirty, cheap, immature and childish talk from a desperate politician who has no conscience. The drug master has nothing to offer. APC was the worst political mistake that Nigerians ever made in the history of political development in Nigeria in 2014. May the gods of this land punish this evil party call APC.

Why won't they think ts sponsored when you fly, you don't use road. You feed excessively on masses money. You don't know wat average Nigerians are going thru.

We are tired already. Even wen I know we are heading for a greater height but the approach is so wrong.

You can't remove all firewood at once. Fire will b quenched.

Do something to cushion the effect of this hardship.

What he's saying is that the people shouldn't have the energy or resources to protest because of the intensity of the hunger.

Because you did something ( APC sponsoring protest) doesn't mean others have that time

There is hunger in the land, if not that obedients decided not to protest Nigeria would have been completely shutdown right now

Of course we all know they're all being sponsored by your party to preempt the real protests which will eventually happen at the rate things are going. Your party did it before with fake pastors, fake OBIdients and even fake result sheets, so we're not in the least bit surprised by this! When the common man finally hits the streets, the billboards will not be printed! cool

Right.

8 years or more of bad government from your party had nothing to do with it.

Buhari and tinubu were geniuses who transformed Nigeria into a superpower greater than usa.

Lawan Senate was called a "robber stamp"

When Akpabio was made the Senate President, I know immediately that Nigeria is in soup. Man is a proper definition of crook.

From the presidency to the cabinet and the leadership of the legislative to the members, there's nothing to expect from them rather than more and more plunging of Nigeria into more disaster.

If we really want the development of this country, it is within us to demand for it. If we keep folding our hands expecting these folks to deliver democracy, we're in for a long ride. On their own they can't cos they'll love to see the status quo maintained.

After all, the greatest book on earth (bible) said, the Kingdom suffereth violence and the violent taketh it by force.

So, if we need our dear Nigeria, we should go for it.
