A good bad idea.

Importing food with scarce dollars would deepen the problem. It'll be more food that Nigerians CANNOT afford.

Instead, the government needs to launch an aggressive and sustained comprehensive attack on bandits and terrorists holding whole farming villages to ransom.

Also, the government needs to approve state police ASAP and have the states set up a special farmland protection squad. Like SARS, but better because they'll only harass trespassing herdsmen and criminal bandits.

Finally, more stringent price control measures need to be introduced. It's MADNESS for the price of goods to jump more than 40-50% in just 7 days.

does Nigeria have a food shortage problem?

You want to import food when one dollar is almost 2k. How much would they sell it by the time it's cleared from the port?

The naira has to gain value against the dollar before we can talk of importation.
Import duty should be waived as well.
Re: Economic Hardship: Begin Importation Of Food - TUC Tells FG by Capernum: 4:26pm On Feb 26
No need to import food.. Just open the borders for food items only and leave story.

just two problems bedeviling the Nigerian economy but the mumu leaders will rather chase winds ....

Due to incessant activities of the herdersmen limiting the activities of farmers, thereby limiting crop production.................Import food, open the boders(quotas) to allow food surplus ...those wicked sellers will be forced to reduce their price..........

Allow waivers, grants franchise to modular rifinaries.....or even subsidiaries in oil and gas .....more so try and fix one of the refineries........then sit down and watch....how transport fare will fall ....leading to fall in food prices .......and tht mumu dollar narratives ....wey no concern any thing even for fufu.........
Simple........just simple.......

Stop confusing yourself. We need Importation through air o, land or sea. We are not producing enough. Buhari killed rice by deceiving Nigerians we can produce ours closing the borders. Economy strive on competition. There is hunger in the land, crime is increasing. Food Importation is very key at the moment.

What a bad idea which will further destroy the falling Naira, Nigeria has enough food but the local farmers prefer to export their farm produce even though they got loans, and free fertilizers from the government.
FG should ban food exportation till further notice and cut VAT rate on every food items, then make it compulsory for the ministry of agriculture in every state to farm at least 100 acres of land.
Lastly state of emergency should be declared in the Nigeria commodity market and prices of food items should be regulated. Meanwhile, I still bought local rice from Tapa farmers at 60k per bag yesterday

It's a laudable point only that it will suffer proper implementation & supervision. Nigeria is currently not structured to work & can never work as long as everything is tied to the centre. Until there is a regional system using the current 6 geopolitical zones as the regions. And they are allowed to care for themselves & remit certain percentage to the federal to handle just few things that relate to foreign affairs, defense, etc. While the regional system takes care of the states under them. That will bring about healthy competition among regions. No room for laziness & tribal sentiment will reduce whenever the people need to protest against wrong policies. It will equally stop over concentration on the fg while the state govts steal unnoticed.

If the dollars for importing arms and ammunition as well as other chemicals are used to import food now, then what happens?

Where will we find the money for the weapons and chemicals

We have scarcity of FX due to a number of reasons, and this clown wants us to import more food which will only make the FX situation even worse!!
the govt needs to fight banditry in a no holds barred way, so the farms will be secure for people to take up farming in a big way. support should be given to farmers in terms of high yield seeds, fertilizers and also storage facilities to reduce waste.
We will always need to import some food items, but Nigeria has the capacity to be self sufficient and even a net exporter of most of our food staples

Open the land boarder let people import from Benin, mali, Senegal etc before thinking of western countries that are using dollar or whatever.

It’s there time to blow until more people get into the business to increase supply and reduce prices.

Is that not the way Glo crashed telecom costs after PDP’s deregulation of the market, something that Fayemi and his progreThief scammers prevented us from getting in the petrol market

Fuel subsidy: We played politics with 2012 Occupy Nigeria – Fayemi

5th September 2023

A former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, on Tuesday, said the protest that trailed the fuel subsidy removal during the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012 was due to political interests.
>
>
The PUNCH reports that on January 1, 2012, President Goodluck announced the removal of fuel subsidy and adjusted the pump price of petrol from N65 per litre to N141.

The decision sparked mass protests, tagged ‘Occupy Nigeria’ across major cities of the country.

The price was later re-adjusted to N97, after more than a week of protests.

Petrol price was later reduced to N87 in 2015.

Jonathan faced serious backlash for the fuel price adjustment, especially from leaders of the All Progressives Congress, who were then in different opposition parties, including the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, Congress for Progressives Congress, All Nigeria Peoples Party, and All Progressive Grand Alliance.
>
>
According to him, the last time Nigeria experienced economic development was during Jonathan’s administration

Nigerians always want the easy way out. There is food shortage, rather than suggest people should try to grow some of their foods while government should ramp up farming and improve security, they want government to give contracts to same politicians to go and import food.

They also never offer suggestions on export the way they are quick to call for imports.
