The Urgent Needs For Foods Importations:
This TUC Position has always been what I have repeatedly said on this Forum and many other Forums.
Why President Tinubu and his team refused to go along this simple economic theory- since August,2023, is still baffling.
According to Economic Theory, what you can't easily Produce, then you Import and that is not a crime!
Then, set up the process on how you can become independent Producer- in Short Term,Medium and Long Terms.
Nigerian Politicians are deceiving Nigerians that there is Food- Silos somewhere and is just deception!
If the Govt-Floored the Market on Foodstuffs - Rice,Beans,Maize,Fish,etc-from India, Thailand, Philippines, Norway, etc and by so doing, you allowed the People to breathe,as Prices will come down.
Nigerian Farmers have been Short-changed by the former CBN governor, when over NBILLIONS of Anchor Borrowers Farmers Money can't be accounted for and at the same time- the Insecurity in their Farms should be attended to ,in order to restore the Farmers confidence!
God bless TUC,for profering Solutions.

Why are Nigerians not seeing beyond the 5 inches in front of their noses? Even if you give 200 million Nigerians bags of rice and foodstuff, what happens when the food finishes? Is Nigeria now one big refugee camp?
My brother 200m bag of rice to nigerians will crash the price immediately and that is the main point.

He will rather import more cocaine than import food.

and Malroux, you and your people will rather sniff and after mixing it with powder, export the corrupted cocaine back to make fast quick money. Drugs, crime, polluted medicines are the trait of you and your people.

Gbadugbakun:
You want to import food when one dollar is almost 2k. How much would they sell it by the time it's cleared from the port?

The naira has to gain value against the dollar before we can talk of importation.

The message was directed at the government, not you or me or any businessman. It also said to be shared for people as a matter of urgency. Learn to comprehend

TUC is getting it wrong.. the protest should be for soldiers to enter all our forests and hot zones in the North to neutralize all the bandits and kidnappers terrorizing the country.. anything asides that is complete waste of time.

Allow men enter bush and kill off those terrorizing the citizens and farmers so hardworking Nigerians can go back to farm.. then let them go into the cities and kill all their sponsors and family members so normalcy can be restored.

Until when?
All these importers are enemies of Nigeria.
Eat what we grow or die.

Why won't the dumb government remove duty on the import of things like grains and medical supplies for Godsake. Remove restrictions on some food imports

This is just where the problem is. No sane nation places ban on foodstuffs. They can only monitor the quality.

A good bad idea.

Importing food with scarce dollars would deepen the problem. It'll be more food that Nigerians CANNOT afford.

Instead, the government needs to launch an aggressive and sustained comprehensive attack on bandits and terrorists holding whole farming villages to ransom.

Also, the government needs to approve state police ASAP and have the states set up a special farmland protection squad. Like SARS, but better because they'll only harass trespassing herdsmen and criminal bandits.

Finally, more stringent price control measures need to be introduced. It's MADNESS for the price of goods to jump more than 40-50% in just 7 days.
You're saying trash. During Jonathan and Obasanjo regime. Dollar is between 100-150 and we import our food and Many products. But when buhari enter and he stop the importation of food, see how dollar jump because he create inflation. I support TUC on this, we should open that Benin republic border for food only. People are dying of hunger and you're saying something like this.

What a bad idea which will further destroy the falling Naira, Nigeria has enough food but the local farmers prefer to export their farm produce even though they got loans, and free fertilizers from the government.
FG should ban food exportation till further notice and cut VAT rate on every food items, then make it compulsory for the ministry of agriculture in every state to farm at least 100 acres of land.
Lastly state of emergency should be declared in the Nigeria commodity market and prices of food items should be regulated. Meanwhile, I still bought local rice from Tapa farmers at 60k per bag yesterday
One of the problem that you guys have is that you don't travel. You'II just stay in one state in south west and start analysis rubbish. In sokoto alone. I know more than 30 border there. How could you block it?. Some states in south are landlock. Especially many south south and southeast states, Nigeria is not practicing big mechanize farming like Benin republic and our youth don't like farming. You can't force the youth to farm. The best thing is to focus on importation of food from Benin republic. Is not only dollar they use to import food in Benin republic border. We need to save ourselves first. I live in Kaduna but I can tell you frankly that Kaduna boys are now joining bandit because of hunger. Nobody is safe including you that stay in south ooo because once they kidnap us finish because of hunger. They would turn to the south

You just confirmed that you know nothing about economics not even it basics. No one would be able to afford the cost of food importation as we speak because CEFA is almost 3 times the Naira and the rate of USD is high. Food importation will crash the Naira and Nigeria might become the next Zimbabwe in a few months of food importation. Meanwhile, There are lots of jobless youth who will love to work in a modern and mechanized farm. The solution to the Nigeria food shortage and poverty is mechanized farming and that can be implemented by the government by empowering farmers and creating farm settlement as it was our status quo in the 60s to early 90s
