Speakers of state Houses of Assembly in the South-West have advocated for the immediate creation of state police and devolution of powers to address the hydra-headed insecurity and other socio-economic challenges facing the country.

The speakers, in a communique signed and made available to journalists at their meeting held in Ikogosi-Ekiti, Ekiti State, said more power should be given to the sub-nationals to further enable them to deliver dividends of democracy to the people.

The communique was co-signed by the conference chairman and Ekiti State speaker, Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye, Adebo Ogundoyin, Olamide Oladiji, and Adewale Egbedun, the speakers of Oyo, Ondo, and Osun respectively.

The speakers stressed the dire need for holistic collaborative measures among the South-West governors to address the prevailing security challenges facing the region.

They also called for increased regional integration efforts to enhance economic growth and development across the six South-Western states.

The communique reads: “The speakers endorse the devolution of power to states, especially in the realm of security, and emphasise the importance of state policing as a means to enhance security and law enforcement at the local level.

“The Conference calls on the federal government to urgently address the rising economic concerns, particularly the shortage of food, and urges citizens to support government efforts in finding lasting solutions to these challenges.

“The conference agrees to host a legislative summit to address critical issues affecting the Southwest region and to foster collaboration and cooperation among the legislative assemblies of the Southwest states.

“We hereby affirm our commitment to these resolutions and pledge to work collectively towards the advancement and prosperity of the Southwest region.”

COMRADES I don't know why despite the high level of insecurity in the north, but their leaders are mute about this state police creation

Good one..

Let them know they can't hold us to ransom anymore. Yorubaland should have developed far far more than what we have today.

If we want farming in Yorubaland, no Fulani should graze cattle anywhere near our lands.

Restructuring with devolution of powers to regions is the way.

They can see the handwriting on the wall.. if they don't regard human lives in their region, others do and are for progress, not terrorism.

The speakers first demand LG autonomy and judiciary fiscal autonomy.
Those are two things that will make governance more effective at the grassroots

After state poliice, the next should be resource control,we will have a saner country with this because people will be closer to their governments.

Let everyone control their resources themselves. Only SW is vocal about this now while others ar the silent

No bigger example of Stockholm syndrome in the World than Northern Nigeria from both perspective of oppressor and the oppressed.

The oppressor (Northern leaders) cannot support State policing or any measure to liberate those he enjoys holding captive.

The oppressed (ordinary Northerners) is of course the classic sufferer of Stockholm syndrome I.e too long in captivity and oppression to the extent he is a willing slave and supporter of his oppressors.

I honestly don’t know how the story of the North will end because the region host leaders who do not want to be progressive or embrace modern ideals that deliverer progressives, innovative and peaceful societies.

Conversely , ordinary Northerners will always lack the will or zeal to liberate themselves from leadership tyranny.

This is because they are under religious and cultural indoctrination that has put them all in permanent trance-like state that completely precludes taking their own leaders to task or demanding better lives and societies.

Classic catch-22 situation.

Indeed. The rest of Nigeria is fed up of the North keeping Nigeria in a Neanderthal state with terrorism and banditry Northern political, societal and religious leaders support/sponsor and never want to see an end to.

There can never be a progressive and economically vibrant Nigeria without decent security of human lives and property.

Over time it has become clear that perhaps Northern leaders do not want an economically vibrant Nigeria and may never want such meaning others must leave the North to her own devices to secure their own progress.

Patience has run out with the wickedness and inhumanity of Northern leaders.

The consensus is now that the North can continue living as it pleases so long as the rest of us can gain administrative and regional freedom to live safe, secure and progressively in our regions of Nigeria without the menaces of “one Nigeria” compromising our security and capacity to grow and develop to our true potentials.

It is quickly becoming clear, beyond rhetoric and ethnocentric finger-pointing Nigerians love engaging in, that it is Yorubas, even if they have their own fault, who are most ready to do whatever is necessary to birth a safer, more modern, more progressive, more equitable, more humane and much better Nigeria overall.
