......as Reps move to raise fine from N100 to N100,000

The House of Representatives is moving to increase the fine for the defacing of Nigerian flag from N100 to N100,000.

The House on Wednesday passed for second reading a bill to amend the Flag and Coats of Arms Act.

The bill, introduced by Sada Soli, was debated and passed for second reading by the lawmakers.

It would be recalled that the Act forbids the defacing or manhandling of the National Flag.

Among other things, the bill seeks to amend section 4 of the principal Act to increase the fine for individual violators from N100 to N100,000.

Also, the bill is proposing N1 million fine for organizations that violate the national flag.

The proposed amendment states that “for an individual will be liable to one hundred thousand naira (N100,000) and in the case of a Corporate Organization, it shall be liable to a Fine of one million naira (N1,000,000) and in the case of a continuing offence, to a Fine of twenty thousand naira (N20,000) for every day for an individual and for a Corporate Organization to a Fine of N100,000 (one hundred thousand) for every day”.

Speaking on the bill, Soli said Nigerians and organisation are notorious for defacing the flag with impunity.

He said the exiting law is not sufficient to prevent the abuse of the flag.

The motion was adopted without opposition. It was consequently referred to relevant committees for further action.

Instead of those old gboats to look for a way to ease the hardship of the country they are there dealing with irrelevant issues.

The country is currently plagued with security problems, inflation which is leading to famine, criminality of a higher magnitude, hunger and starvation in the land, high rate of unemployment, poor basic amenities, bad roads, sub-zero electricity supply, and all they do is to turn a blind eye and deaf ear to the cry of the people just because of their selfish political greed.

Things these reps push

Maybe CV and interviews should be used to 'appoint' Representatives, and not the moneybag politics

How does that affect the price of a bag of rice or the taxes farmers pay to bandits to go to their farms?

Not a bad move.
But can we get real laws that will make public office holder answerable to Nigerians?
Like every state should publish it's monthly statements, it's IGR and contractors and how much was paid to each of those contractors each month.
States should do a public listing of each project and let's see names of bidders and amount each company is bidding, if you're not giving the contract to the cheapest, there must be a good reason.
Police station should report every fighting within their coverage area to the people of that area.
They should also report how many people were arrested on a monthly basis and reason for their arrest to the public.
Police officers should also be made to face public disciplinary on for their excess.
Every state should invest at least 20 percent of it's IGR into farming ( abi na till hunger kill everyone before we declare state of emergency on food)
An just some laws like this fit make us think say una dey work.

This is timely.
Btw,Nigeria only has one National flag and it’s the first frame here and not the second.
A lot of people are beginning to display the second as our flag. Including government officials.
This is so bad and unpatriotic. I hope the NOA do something about this sooner than later.

Of course the old penalty is outdated and should've long been replaced. I don't expect any opposition for this from any patriotic citizen so I guess the bill would pass into law.

is this not funny and illogical; expecting a hungry man and somebody facing existential threats to his life, to have the sanity and time respecting a flag of a nation that signify the symbol of failure and total disappointment to his basic expectations of safety and food security .
The honourables should face the basics.
