The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, has assured that notwithstanding the pains of the harsh economic realities and the surging prices of food and other commodities, Nigerians will soon smile again.

Edun said that the economy would continue to soar higher, noting that what is best for the country and eases the pains of Nigerians is foremost in the mind of President Bola Tinubu.

The minister disclosed this while speaking at the burial of Dr Onaolapo Soleye, former Finance Minister, held at Owu Baptist Church, Abeokuta, on Friday.

This is just as Governor Dapo Abiodun has equally promised to immortalise the late minister to appreciate his contributions to the economic development of the nation.

Soleye, a former minister during the military regime of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), died at 90 last November.

Edun said, “What is good for Nigeria is what is uppermost in our minds, not what the IMF or any other foreign organisation thinks.

“By God’s grace, under the able leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we will move forward with this economy, and Nigerians will smile again.”

He acknowledged the brilliance and contribution of Soleye to the nation’s economy during his lifetime, saying he was able to resolve some trade disputes through some of his initiatives.

Speaking earlier, the Ogun State governor said his administration plans to immortalise the late Soleye.

Abiodun acknowledged the contribution of Soleye to the development of the Western Region, noting that Oodua Investment Group was birthed during his tenure as Commissioner for Industries.

He also contributed to the success of Ogun State as Commissioner for Trade, Industries, and Cooperatives, as well as Works and Housing and later Finance.

Governor Abiodun added that it was under the watch of Soleye as Commissioner for Industries that the Gateway Hotels were built and commissioned across the state.

The deceased served as finance minister between 1984 and 1985 under the military regime of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, where he fought and resisted the devaluation of the naira and also ensured that new notes were printed.

“Baba was a gentleman. But as gentle as he was, he was also an activist. From all accounts, he was a black nationalist.

“As a state government, we have decided that we are going to immortalise this great man of Ogun State. We will be naming something after him, something that people will remember as someone who served this state diligently and selflessly.

“I will be dialoguing with Baba Obasanjo. Because we are building something in finance, trade, and investment, I will decide with Baba Obasanjo which of those edifices we are going to name the Onaolapo Soleye edifice,” he said.

Things might be tough now but this govt is definitely not clueless. Sometimes to jump higher in life you have to stoop to conquer. My joy is that the economy is now in the hands of competent people - people with the expertise and political will to make this country great. Every country that rose first dipped to gain momentum, China, America , Japan, etc.

We may not smile soon as there are many Nigerians who doesn't want Nigeria to be good as a way of enriching their wealth....

Market women and almost every Nigerians are damn too greedy... So I doubt if Nigeria can be good with too much saboteurs at the grassroot of this nation..

They only complain when things don't favour them but when it favours them, they join the group of people making things hard for common Nigerians

That useless Buhari and his second finance minister killed Nigerian economy. Danger of putting Almageri people in sensitive position whether rich or poor they will think every thing must be spent. That's why they don't have savings. They don't have shame they beg anything for money. Adeosun was doing the right thing.

You can say you believe in the country getting it right . But the harm being done here is the party matter , since 2015 , the APC has been enshrined in looking after or preferring only those that supported them in their party to man the affairs of governance. And this has been haunting them .

When they start looking beyond party lines for solutions , the country can move positively and faster too

When is "soon"?

And how soon is this? Because Tinubu has only succeeded in inflicting hunger and starvation on Nigerians.

Hahahahaha, same motivational messages we heard during Buhari era, stop giving masses empty hopes, if things will get better, it could have being better from the day Mr president appointed his ministers and other special advisers, if all of so called ministers and special advisers could not find a way to ease the hardship after five months in the office, then there is nothing else this government can do, soon we shall be preparing for his second term election, so when is it going to be better?

Awon were.

The hardship isn't affecting you and your kin so the masses must wait.

Those that don't die of starvation from the hardship would enjoy your phantom smiles.

Well, Nigerians deserve the leaders they vote.

Time will tell by Bob Marley & The Wailers [1978] comes to mind.
