Katsina University says memo on religious groups on campus targeted at Muslims, not Christians

The authorities of the Umaru Yar’Ádua University, Katsina, have denied discriminating against Christian students in the approval granted a students religious association to operate on its campus.

The Acting Dean of Student Affairs of the University, Sulaiman Kankara, had in January 17 memo informed students of a new guideline for the registration of clubs and associations in the institution.

...But the controversial part of the memo which made the document to go viral was the dean’s pronouncement that the “Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN) is the only religious association allowed to operate on campus.”

After the memo was shared on social media, the university came under ferocious attacks from many Nigerians, with some commentators saying the guideline was part of government’s plot to Islamise Nigeria.

But when contacted on Sunday morning, Dr. Kankara said that aspect of the guideline was actually targeted at Islamic groups which were beginning to mushroom on campus, creating division among students of the same faith.

The dean said, “Actually there is one misconception in the memo. But the fact of the matter is that in Umaru Yar’Ádua University, there is no association known as Christian Students Association.

“There is one religious association and subsidiary Islamic students associations like the Tijjanniya Students Movement in Nigeria, Academic Forum of Islamic Movement in Nigeria and many associations like that.

“They are Islamic students association. So what we want is to have a single union which will be the mouthpiece of muslim students and that is the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria.

Katsina varsity denies restriction on Christian students’ worship hours

...The management of the Federal University Dutsin-ma, Katsina State, on Monday, denied issuing a memo specifying hours or days of worship by Christian students in the institution.

A memo purportedly issued by the institution’s Director of Security Services, CSP Abda Salisu, and dated February 8, 2022, had allegedly directed that students who were Christians were allowed to carry out services on the campus only on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 6pm and 7pm.

The memo added that the students were free to conduct services anytime on Sundays.

The institution’s Director of Public Relations and Protocol, Habibu Matazu, however, told the PUNCH, on Monday, that at no time did the management issue such memo .

He described the memo as fake.

“This is a cosmopolitan University and the management can never issue such memo,” he declared.

When reminded that the memo was signed by the institution’s Director of Security Services, Matazu insisted the memo was fake.

Matazu later issued a statement declaring, “The attention of the Management of Federal University Dutsin-Ma has been drawn to a purported statement in circulation on the Social Media alleging that Christian activities have been banned at the University.

Those Universities are PUBLIC universities and not private or missionary schools.

These ones in Katsina are public. They don't have the right to ban Christian gatherings on campus.

Christian universities are different from a state institution. The problem here is the Universities are Federal and state institutions. You can't compare a faith based private institution to a government establishment. They are not the same thing.

Are you sure you read through what you wrote or somebody wrote it for you? state or federal university is different from private university. You even said christain university, are you saying that state or federal university in katsina is an islamic university?

Good move by the two universities. The North is finally waking up from their slumber. Southern Christians should go back to where they come from and school there. Is that too difficult to understand?

I schooled In a federal institution In the north and the Muslim students tried to stop us from followship In the class rooms that we are disturbing them meanwhile the school have refused to allocate a land for a church. It almost turn bloody. When Muslims says Islam is a religion of peace , I kept on wondering which peace are they referring to or is it the opposite?

All public institutions must be fair to every religion. Those who are not comfortable seeing a different religion from theirs on campus, should attend faith based institutions of their choice. A Christian shouldn't be claiming rights in an Islamic school nor a Muslim in a Christian school but schools run with public funds must always be neutral.

Unilorin did the same thing since 2008 also you can not see 1 campus fellowship on Campus but they the Muslims gather stones round together to form a mosque under every tree to worship. Very useless people fighting for their God.

. The truth is there is a freedom of religion as eshrined in our constitution. With this no public university should ban any religious activity in Nigeria. However private religious universities may otherwise want to enforce acceptability of the religion that owns the school. This is against the law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. That of Katisina case is disturbing because the universities belong the government not individuals or a religious group.

God have mercy.

It should not be happening in Katsina state where Muslim extremists are growing stronger and causing havoc for the state.

Extreme Islam kills Islam itself, so the people should adopt moderate Islam that allows liberal lifestyle.

Muslims from that areas of Katsina state would travel to christian dominated part of Nigeria and enjoy the freedom to practice their religion. Returning back to Katsina, they would not reciprocate that gesture to non-muslims in their community.

Muslims would travel to Europe and the Americas and freely practice their faith there. Coming home to their Katsina they won't reciprocate that gesture...

How do such Muslims view the Nigerian 1999 Constitution (as amended) ?
The Fundamental Rights which the constitution provided for us all; educated Katsina people running the two universities, are they above the law?

I am from the southern part and in my state, there is a mosque in the university here. It is obvious, what you guys practise over there, is far from a peaceful one
