Terrible. I doubt jail will be in the cards for him. It's an accident and if he is licensed and not DUI ing, that could play in his favor. Also street trading is illegal. RIP to the dead.

Have you killed someone before and compensated the hungry family? The law is still coming for you. Whether intentional or accident, it's still a federal crime and the family has no say in how you get punished.

I have seen how cases like this play out in the Police station a few times.

If the young man gets a Lawyer, agrees to cover the funeral cost, settle the Family of the deceased, and they agree to it, He's golden.

Involuntary manslaughter is a crime under the law. If you hit someone with your car, and it leads to the death of someone, you have committed a crime.

However, the Court might look at the "circumstances" leading to the accident. In civil cases, the defendant can claim it was an accident, or contributory negligence on the part of the deceased.

The family of the deceased could also accept some form of financial settlement from the defendant, shutting the door on any possible future civil suit.

This is the problem with road side trading. If we complain, people will say the government has not provided shops for them. At the end of the day removing them from the road is for their own safety

That's not true. The family of the woman may want to settle out f court. All he needs to do is bail himself and settle the woman's family. He may not even spend up to two weeks in detention

How are you sure he is going to kirikiri, unless you mean detention during trial? Do you know if the unfortunate incident was not out of recklessness, but factors beyond his control eg mechanical failure, bad road, failed Tyre etc. 22 year old is way above driving age of 18, so it is wondered why the police guy mentioned his age. Another thing is that the deceased was selling groundnut on the road or roadside placing herself in danger. This is a major issue that will be argued by his Defence.
Where he will have issues is if he had eg no drivers license, was proven to be intoxicated (we do not have field test), or was seen to be driving recklessly (video recording).
May the soul of the deceased rest in peace.
