Those driving on the bridge had almost zero reaction time, the bridge broke into pieces and fell straight into the river on impact. Except your car door windows are already down, escaping from a drowning car with electric windows is an uphill task.

The height clearance was good. The ship collided with one of the pillars that supported the bridge.
