The ancient city of Ibadan has long been a favoured destination for tourists, with Delesolu’s Palace standing out as a popular choice due to its many historical sites. Located in the Oje Community of Ibadan North East, Oyo State, the palace is known for its unique practice of rearing crocodiles as pets. Today, on March 28, 2024, the legendary crocodile at the palace passed away.

Chief Raufu Yusuffu Delesolu (Ayingun Olubadan), head of the family and a respected Chief in Ibadan, shared that the crocodile had been brought to Igbejo Delesolu in 1940 after the first one was acquired by white men. Since then, it had
resided in the Delesolu compound until its recent demise.

Chief Raufu explained that people from various backgrounds, including Africans and white visitors, enjoyed seeing and feeding the crocodile with different foods. He mentioned that the crocodile had been around for about 84 years, predating his own birth.

Contrary to speculation, Chief Raufu clarified that the crocodile was not worshipped as a deity by their ancestors but was instead treated as a cherished pet. He reminisced about times when the crocodile would venture out during heavy rains, prompting a search by men in the compound to bring it back safely.

While the family mourns the loss of the crocodile, they are making arrangements for its burial within the family compound.

Despite this loss, there are still other tourist attractions within the compound and Oje community, with plans to potentially acquire another pet to continue preserving their heritage.

Rest in peace, dear God's Killing Machine.
Crocodiles are very long lived creatures like tortoises, though the latter very much outlive these perfect killers of the rivers, lakes and seas.
Crocodiles can live for a year without food, all thanks to their slow metabolism, and can lie motionless for hours on land. They range in size from the 1.5-1.9 m(4.9-6.2 ft) two species of dwarf crocodiles endemic to Africa, to the massively huge 6m(20ft) Saltwater Crocodile found in the tropical Indo-Pacific waters and coastal areas of India,SE Asia including Indonesia, Australia, and many Pacific Islands of Melanesia including New Caledonia, Solomon Islands,Fiji , Vanuatu.
There are about 18 species of crocodiles including the mentioned species.

If not taken care properly there are some wild animals that see you as the pet and not the other way round. When they see you getting fatter, then they chose a day to make their harvest

Fun fact:
The crocodile is the only animal that has an existence spanning 250 million years. Yes! They were there when the dinosaurs were roaming around.

They have a very strong bite force. Greater than that of the hippo. They are a deadly killing machine. They don't chew, they just swallow. They will swallow stones just like chickens to aid digestion.

They typically sleep for 17 hours a day. They need to. They are cold blooded so they need to conserve every energy and heat they can.

They can go months without eating. But be assured you don't want to meet one when it's looking for food. Crocs will rather be left alone. But if you make yourself available to be eaten? Who says no to a free meal?

They live on average for 40 years but some species are known to live for 80 to 100 years.

They don't make good pets and will eat you the first chance they get.

Ooni ile Dele.
The story was that the Magician turn to Crocodile and sadly wasn’t able to turn back to human.
After several days and many rituals, the man died as a crocodile and sadly had a baby shortly before passing away.
Is the crocodile baby their family member?
That question remains unanswered.
