A devastating fire tore through the Docemo area in Lagos Island yesterday, causing extensive damage to 14 buildings. Thanks to the swift response of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the blaze has been contained. Currently, efforts are underway to dampen down the affected area as damage assessment and preventive measures are being implemented.

Unfortunately, one life was lost in the incident. The victim was refuelling a working generator, which sparked the fire. Additionally, nine individuals suffered from carbon monoxide inhalation, while one sustained a fracture. All affected individuals were promptly treated and discharged on-site by the Emergency Management Service.

***Update: Lagos Island Fire Incident**

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has successfully contained a significant fire incident involving 14 buildings in Lagos Island. Unfortunately, two structures have collapsed entirely, with two partially collapsed.

The fire originated from the refueling of a generator, exacerbated by fuel storage in kegs at a penthouse housing a printing shop with chemical contents.

Swift actions by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service have brought the fire under control, transitioning to a damping down strategy to ensure public safety.

Efforts to assess damage and implement preventive measures are ongoing. We appreciate the collaboration of all emergency responders at the scene.

Caution is advised when handling combustible materials to prevent future incidents.

Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Responds Swiftly to Blaze on Lagos Island

Lagos City, April 9, 2024 — The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has acted swiftly in response to a significant fire outbreak originating from a three-story building situated at Jankara Street, adjacent to Docemo Street, on Lagos Island.

Alerted promptly at 10:37hrs on Tuesday, firefighting operations have been mobilized to contain the spreading inferno, which has already impacted adjacent structures on Docemo and Nnamdi Azikwe Streets after its initial occurrence at three buildings along Jankara Street. While progress has been made in partially subduing the blaze, ongoing efforts are focused on its complete extinguishment.

The firefighting operations face additional challenges due to the necessity of ensuring the safe evacuation of traders and the preservation of their merchandise within a densely populated area, necessitating rigorous crowd control measures.

As of present, there have been no reported casualties, and investigations into the cause of the fire are actively underway.

Further updates will be communicated as the situation continues to develop.

Initial reports in the media had stated that the fire was caused by stored fireworks, but it now appears that the explosions were not caused by fireworks but by kegs of petrol that had been stored in a building.

Jubril A. Gawat @Mr_JAGs

ONCE AGAIN: Stop Pouring petrol into the tank of a running Generator. It will never end well. 🚨 🚨🚨🚨

Just one random person refuelling while Generator was running, coupled with heavy storage of petroleum around and BOOM !!!!!

So Sad.

I would advice the government to investigate the fire's cause to prevent future incidents. Learning from this is vital for implementing better safety measures.

The recurring problem of fire.

naptu2:
The only unusual thing this time is that it occurred during the Rainy Season.

It has almost become a tradition that there should be major fire outbreaks at Oko Baba (on the Mainland) and on Lagos Island sometime between September and January every year. The reason for the fire outbreaks is quite obvious.

Oko Baba is a gigantic illegal sawmill. Dry wood is stored haphazardly over a wide area in Ebute Metta. The wood and sawdust is often burnt there, making it difficult for motorists on Third Mainland Bridge to see (driving down that stretch of the bridge is extremely dangerous because of the smoke). The Government has had plans to relocate the sawmills for a very long time. These plans have often been frustrated by people who spread rumours that the government just wants to steal land. It seems as if there is a major fire outbreak at that place every single dry season. There was another fire outbreak there yesterday.

There have also been fire outbreaks at the various markets on Lagos Island almost every Dry Season since the 1980s. One of the reasons for the fires on Lagos Island is the enormous amount of illegal fireworks that are stored there every Christmas season. The fire in 2012 caused such a huge explosion that some people thought that Boko Haram militants had bombed Lagos. The explosion was so powerful that it knocked down part of the building in which the fireworks were stored. The sale, distribution and use of these fireworks have been illegal since the early 1980s, but people keep using them during the Christmas season and so there is a huge market for them and this market is centred around Lagos Island.

The large number of clothes that are sold on Lagos Island also serve as fuel for these fire outbreaks that occur during the Dry Season. On one occasion someone was trying to refuel an electricity generator that was still on and this caused a fire that burnt through bales of fabric.

Hmmm.

This must not happen again abeg in our dear Lagos.

I just feel they are not saying the truth about this whole story of refuelling a working generator.

People should desist from storing fuel at places like this.

So, it's not fireworks (banger) as reported by some newspapers.

How can you be refueling a working generator? People need to be educated on that safety is most important in life.

Thanks to the firefighters for contacting the inferno. I couldn't imagine the number of casualties if not contained. 14 houses already.

Thanks to lagos state fire figters for the swift response.

People need to be educated on refueling their gen while it's on and those plazas on the island especially idumagbo and environment are too close that you can just stretch your leg from one building to another without strew. The government needs to look into it to avoid future occurrence.
