Kebbi Lawmaker, Hassan Umar Suspended Over ‘Unguarded Utterances’ by Wisdomkosi(m): 10:12am On Apr 16

The Kebbi State House of Assembly has suspended the member representing Birnin Kebbi North Constituency, Hassan Umar.

Umar was suspended over alleged unguarded utterances against the assembly leadership.

Clerk of the House, Suleiman Shamaki, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Monday, April 15.

The House noted that the suspension was a result of “unguarded utterances” and “instigation” of some members against the leadership of the house.

It read: “I Suleiman Shamaki, the Clerk of Kebbi State House of Assembly, has been directed to inform the general public that the assembly, its Executive Session held on Friday, April12, 2024, unanimously resolved and suspended Hassan Umar, member representing Birnin Kebbi North constituency, as a result of his unguarded utterances.”

The statement further listed the lawmaker’s other offences to include, “Instigation of some members against the leadership of the House and causing disharmony between the Executive and the legislature in the House.”

No assembly has power to suspend it's member the court has ruled on this

Not true.

Even in the US, members can be suspended or even expelled for violating the rules of the house.

Each House may determine the Rules of its Proceedings, punish its Members for disorderly Behaviour, and, with the Concurrence of two-thirds, expel a Member. The House and Senate's power to discipline their members generally includes the authority to censure, reprimand, fine, or expel.

You guys need to educate yourself about what's going on in the world before making these "only in Nigeria" comments.

So far Trump is worse than any Godgfatherism that you have ever witnessed in Nigeria. If you don't support Trump, you are finished in the Republican party.

After making our choice of our representatives, they get to the National Assembly and find themselves with leaders, who are able to suspend them for various reasons. While those leaders continue the business of representing their respective constituencies, they prevent us from having representation for whatever duration that they choose.

Truly some of these rules need revisiting.
