Communism, especially forced communism, leads to poverty. The government does not have the right, especially in an ethnically heterogenous country as Nigeria, to enforce prices and even shut down private properties. Tomorrow, when we receive fewer foreign investors compared to, say, Vietnam, please remember what you people supported o.

You want foreign investors and their monies? Protect private property and investments.

Ok.. Educate me,

I am all ears.

Tell me what I don’t know.

What I know is that the government plays a role of intervening and making policies that affect individual traders and marketers. The aim is to correct market failures, promote efficiency, and achieve social economic goals for fair balance of the market.

The government cannot set a price ceiling without first properly analyzing .

In this case, They are using market conditions.
Demand and Supply, reasons for price increase, seasonal fluctuations and others.

You should know this from Basic Economics.

Buy from those who have lowered their prices. That is the beauty of capitalism - the right to choose, not dictate.

Tackle the issue of insecurity in the middle belt so farmers can go to farm without fear, that would go a long way.

If there is one thing I have noticed about Nigerians is their predilection for dishonesty. Nigerians have this innate dishonesty gene, which makes them dodge or parry questions. If farmers in the middle belt and northern part of the country can cultivate their harvests without being butchered, kidnapped or their crops/farmlands razed, prices of food would reduce considerably. Very few Nigerians are willing to confront this issue by demanding the government ensure lives and properties are safe.

Thank you for mentioning the most critical aspect of high food prices in Nigeria.

Funny enough, supermarket things are even more cheaper.

I know of Templehill supermarket that constantly runs on Maikano gen. (disel) in Isolo. Shebi na government dey give them money buy fuel?

FG should make sure they give the Super markets stable power supply to avoid them using constant generator to run their businesses as doing so would cut down cost drastically.

If these guys see light 24/7, no government go force them change their prices. They themselves would adjust.

I thought Tinubu and his clueless economic team said Market forces will determine the price of goods and services. cheesy

When we tell them Tinubu have nothing to offer they call us names but we are ever determined to rescue our nation from propagandists.

Na wa o..... Why should you expose your ignorance this way? Market forces (demand and supply) apply to the exchange rate based on the government's position.

If Tinubu has nothing to offer, then Obi is worse. I just don't understand why you guys keep going with this narrative always. Nothing good should come out from Nigeria because your candidate didn't win.

Before you return to attack me, I am not for any of these politicians including Tinubu as they are all the same. Despite not supporting any, I still want Nigeria to make progress

This sounds good, but make sure you do some research and determine the cost of production before imposing prices on items. If you run sellers out of business, you will cause more problems for the country. The last time I checked, Nigeria doesn't run a communist or socialist economy.

It is not good. The countries that regulate prices are always poor. This is a verifiable fact. The moment prices are regulated, poverty increases.

You should have shared that data in your comment. One thing I know about Nigerians is that we are terribly greedy. Most Nigerians are opportunists. That's why price control is important.

Think of bus drivers or keke riders inflating their fares because it rained. This country is crazy and regulatory bodies should always be in the field.

Yeah , Nigerians personality neutralizes Market forces to determine prices but however govt going after retailers is one dummy move .. chasing after retailers is unnecessary, catch the mother hen and you wil have the chicks in ur hand in no time .. what do i mean
Govt should enforce all producers/manufactuters to make there company prices known.. just like if you buy Power oil satchet you wil see the price printed on it, #100 that automatically tells the consumer what the profit margin should be,
mimmiee chin chin after advert screams the price is #150 .. retailers are trapped, cos they know consumers won't buy @ anything above #200.
when retailers know consumers are wel informed it breaks there unionism, competition takesover

Obedient said these is a govt of propaganda, oya naw! make govt kuku use media coordinate prices

Mumu prices are not determined by enforcement or price control but by forces of demand and supply although in Nigeria market prices are determined by ... wickedness, selfishness, foolishness of both the sellers and government....the citizens also contribute to this by way of being docile

Please visit Blenco supermarket and SuperMart in Lagos.

Those ones will not put price tag on their goods.

Only to notice the heavy bill after paying and d huge difference in prices from other stores
Then go to a market that sells cheaper, when more people do so then the demand for blenco goods and services will drop and they will be forced to review their prices. That’s how demand and supply works in economics! But asking them to shut down is totally ridiculous! You Nigerians are an amusing lot. What kind of education are you all getting in that country??

Good one.

Don't only go there once to enforce and then stop. Always go from one super market to another to ensure compliance

The issue is fuel is expensive. I got fuel for 695 per liter yesterday. Now, there is no electricity, I have to pay for expensive fuel for my house, my car and my business. These makes me spend 5 times what I used to spend. To meet up, I need to increase the prices of my products and services in order to pay my bills and remain in business.

If they are serious why not go to the local markets to enforce prices.
They can increase prices but people doing genuine business cannot.
Policies affect a lot of things in an economy.
The policies they make should be human friendly and not too Draconian.

We have to remove all forms of emotion when looking at things like this.
Did FG help these supermarkets with the required capital to start their respective businesses?
What about the cost of fuel?
What about the cost of electricity?
The supermarkets and open markets are very different. If I bought a container of goods when dollar was N1900 should I sell lower than my cost price because dollar has gone down?
What about the cost of diesel?
You cannot tell private businesses how to conduct their daily operations, they have a business model they must abide by.
Let’s not forget the optics of this, how would foreign investors react to this? If foreign investor sees that he has no control over his business would he consider coming here?
I’m just giving a very rudimentary explanation, it’s a lot more complex than this.

No emotions here, I have always been in support of price control since I had understanding of economics from the start.

To emphasize, The government does not just regulate without analysis. they check and balance.

They understand what you explained there and they do take it into consideration before setting a ceiling price for a particular good.

I only mentioned Market conditions, but there are a couple of others used. But the base standard which is used in Nigeria is Market conditions.

This was also what was done during Buhari’s military regime.
