How many shop are paying the current minimum wage?

tellsblinks:

Would you pay someone 200k if you have a company that earns 500k monthly?

Minimum wage is for every business! Including that small shop in your street

If Govt benchmark up to 100k at least, people will find it reasonable.

You can subsidize less reproductive ventures like Hajj, but can't pay workers well

Security guards at my workplace earn 60k a month. The FG can do better as regards minimum wage.

At this Point It's only the NLC that's concerned About Nigerians Welfare

A part of me actually thought they would accept bribe and succumb to any money FG proposes.

But they are really with us on this.

Thank you NLC ❤
But some people where saying that the NLC are political. I begin to wonder the money that the labour are asking is for their own pocket. Tribalism is worst that racist.

When the govt. like to copy what is only good for them to enrich themselves alone.

U remove subsidy on fuel, on forex, want to remove on electricity and other things.

They will tell u that is how it is done in advanced con3.

But, comes to pay workers what is truly good for them to live a meaningful life, they will come with the the con3 will experience inflation, hyperinflation blah blah blah.

Their is no con3 that will prosper if the citizens are poor. Manufacturers will not benefit in such an economy. The con3 is already experiencing stagflation.

This is bullshit if this is not applicable in private sectors.
From my understanding, it is illegal to pay anyone below the minimum wage within the boundary of the country. How come do we still have many private organizations paying their workers (many of them, graduates) below this current minimum wage?

In case most of you don't understand the need for NLC and TUC to stand their grounds, 54k is just N100 per meal for a family of 6 (Father, mother and 4 children for 30 days).

N100 X 3 = N300
N300 X 6 = N1,800
N1,800 X 30 days = 54k

In most parts of the country, you can't even get a plate of food for N500 talk less of N100.

This is just for feeding. What about house rent, Electricity bills, fueling, school fees, hospitals bills etc.

Hope this regime is favouring the BATarials?
This is the major problem. Why would anyone have up to 4 children in this modern era, especially in Africa where poverty is rife?
I can't seem to understand. If you need to have children, it shouldn't be more than two max.
You litter everywhere with children and never think of the consequences of taking care of them.

Removal of fuel subsidy and the floating of the Naira have accomplished what positive thing since May 29, 2023? If subsidy were to still be in place, no way labour would be demanding this much. A clueless government. You can't make the country difficult to live in for your citizens and expect them to now accept to live on peanuts, not when all the political office holders are even drawing bogus salaries. Anyone who thinks NLC's demands are outrageous is probably delusional.

We are not ready for this conversation. One thing you should know is while you're praying for increased minimum wage also consider the businesses affected by inflation.

If it's too high, the business might increase cost of goods and services and the cycle would continue

You must have forgotten that labour is one of the factors of production or that no economy can survive without adequate human capital. There's no statistics anywhere suggesting that Nigeria is overpopulated. This human capital is what Bill Gates was advising the Buhari regime the last time he came around to adequately invest in as it will drive the country towards more economic growth and development. In the face of rife corruption and mismanagement, is the number of children really our problem?

It will be well with you.

People have not stopped to think why the last minimum wage increase was so readily acceptable by Labour and all Nigeria workers? it was just an additional ₦10,100 naira.

The fact that NLC is asking for over 500k increase which has been properly broken down to reflect current realities, and they didn't lie about it, shows that government has really driven this country to the ground.

When it is time for Nigerians to breathe, there will be negotiations on financial oxygen but we don't see any breakdown or negotiation when they want to renovate one house with 400 billion naira and buy Toyota for 500 billion.

I never thought anyone in any part of this country will consider offering as low as 54k as minimum wage going by the current high cost of everything. In fact Labour would be considerate if they accept N200k as minimum wage but I'm sure government wouldn't mind paying as low as 20k. This is the kind of creatures we are in this country, human shape , animal heart

Good points, but let's face facts... Can this nation truly survive the fallout of paying a minimum wage of over 300k in this unproductive and corrupt economy?!!

The way prices of commodities will hit the roof due to more money chasing fewer goods will sink the nation into oblivion.

Labor needs to sit down with seasoned economists (they ought to have some in their rank and file), and find a way to make workers' lives better without plunging the nation into a calamitous HYPERINFLATION!

You don't just toss lots of money into people's hands without a buoyant economy to cushion their spending.

For me... Both sides of this debacle should come clean and be reasonable.

FG needs to seriously open up about the nation's finances... They have to show that they are cutting back on their excesses too.

The government is not cutting back on excess spending. I know you're not unaware of current events, so surely you know that Tinubu just approved N90 billion for the Hajj pilgrimage! This pilgrimage is primarily attended by top politicians, their families, and friends.

Secondly, he approved half a trillion naira (N500 billion) for a committee to deliberate on the minimum wage issue. Does this sound like cutting back to you?

Do I need to show you the extravagant wages of the House of Representatives, the Senate, and their numerous executive aides and PAs?

The president and VP combined have on payroll 65 advisers and special advisers!! Whats absurdity is that? I have long given up on Tinubu doing anytjhing positive and his acts show he is extremely insincere and corrupt

This government is just insincere in its claims of austerity and cost-cutting measures.

As it turns out, we are overpopulated beyond our our means. Or how do you explain the obvious fact that we can't even feed ourselves? Unemployment everywhere because our resources are overstretched.
My Dad got his first job on the day of his graduation in the 70s. That was a time our national resources are proportional to our population.
If you want to be honest with yourself, to raise for children averagely comfortably in Nigeria of today, you have to be earning nothing less half a million a month.
While I think the FG should increase the minimum wage to about a hundred thousand or above, it is very important as citizens to do our own part.
Uncontrolled explosion in population is already having its effect on us as a nation with the inherent unemployment, rising insecurity and hunger. We can't keep breeding like rats and hoping somehow money will fall from somewhere to take care of them.

Paying 250k to civil servants and just a few in the private sector wont cause the prices of goods and services to hit the roof top. This is not the first time the country is reviewing minimum wage. If it didn't cause prices to hit roof top in the past why should it now?

It's only when about 80 percent or more of the population receives that amount being proposed ,you can expect inflation. The people receiving minimum wage in the both the public and private sector in Nigeria is less than 5 percent of the population in Nigeria. This is what you need to consider before considering any talk of too much money entering the system after wages are reviewed upwards.

We're already experiencing inflation which has drastically reduced the purchasing power of most people. If minimum wage is not reviewed to create balance in the system, the Nigerian economy may finally crumble . Manufacturers are already complaining of recording very low sales and the reason is because there's not enough money in the hands of people to buy them.

Another thing is that the current value of the naira is not like before. So any increase in wages should take into consideration the current exchange rate of the naira to the dollar.

When Buhari approved 30k minimum 5 years ago,it was equivalent to $83 . Now, 100k or less which some persons are suggesting as reasonable increase ,currently exchange for about $66 .

So based on this, what do you think should be a reasonable upward review of minimum wage?

Sigh... Just give them 80K per month offer abeg.

It makes no sense that workers can't feed or transport themselves every month on the salaries you pay them.

Maybe a little more transparency would set everything right.

Show the labor leaders the current state of the nation's finances and economy...!

There is no way you can't reach a compromise once you lay all the cards on the table.

If Labor believes and insists you can do better, that's probably because you are hiding facts from them.

Why hide income facts from them?!!

Without total honesty and all round changes in governance, this nation is going nowhere!!!
as if you are not in Nigeria where lawmakers with fleet of cars are bought more in hundreds of billions every four years.
Do you know how much the renovation of vice president's residence is costing the nation and so on.
Nigeria has the money to pay above the NLC proposed wage only they want to perpetually control the masses through the weapon of hunger.

I don't really understand... What percentage of Nigerians are civil servants? I believe a rather minute percentage, not taking away the fact most of them are redundant workers, e.g those that work in water corporation in states that don't have government water

So this NLC noise is just for that small percentage, whereas the effect of the increase, such as attendant inflation will affect everyone, especially those that didn't benefit from the increase

The nation is only unproductive to those who are poor. The politicians are reaping good from this unproductiveness of the nation.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the stand of the NLC/TUC and I pray they stand firm as a solid rock.
Let the FG come out with a template on how that purported #54,000 would be spent on a monthly basis by that civil servant and let's even assume that it's just for a single individual without any dependants if that's even possible.
The FG knows what to do to make the nation productive and very productive but as a nation and a people we prefer short cuts and like putting forth unrealistic policies that are only good on paper.
There's a big difference between a nation being operational rather than functional and that is where and what Nigeria is.
