Odumegwu-Ojukwu; In an earlier speech to Igbos before joining APGA: ‘I Have Paid My Dues,’ he had stated: “For you (Ndigbo), I abandoned all ease and embraced pain. For you, I impoverished myself to buy your protection. For you I walked every battlefront to assure your welfare. For you I stood when every other person crouched. For you I endured 13 years of bitter exile. For you I endured 10 months of maximum security prison. For you I embraced priestly poverty. For you I continue to struggle…What I have said is not harsh, it is only the naked truth and it reflects only the intensity of the love I habour for my people.” And in return, he wanted their votes to continue the struggle, which endeared him to Ndigbo as always! |

Even though Ojukwu is remembered for Biafra, I believe his lasting impact is Igbo unity. He united us with firm will and determination. This is much deeper than what he did during the pogroms, during the civil war and after it. It a higher way of assessing his impact on the Igbo people. |

Aigbofa history is looking very favorably at Ojukwu. Look at this excerpt from The Economist. A reputable unbiased source for information. Secession was surely not what Colonel Ojukwu had in mind when he became governor of the East. Just five months before Biafra broke away he was arguing for a looser federation, and he got the promise of it, even though his fellow military governors soon backtracked, realising they had been outwitted. The colonel was clever and more educated than his counterparts, which may have been why he would not defer to his antagonist, Lieut-Colonel Yakubu Gowon, the federal supreme commander; or perhaps he was just proud and obstinate, as his critics had it. Of course, the general, as he soon made himself, had a difficult part to play. He wanted to show that Biafra was a serious country, self-reliant, efficient, able to take its place as the “first nation-state south of the Sahara”. He also had to present it as a victim, a plucky little population of about 13m, reluctantly taking on a bully with nearly three times as many people and all the resources of an established state. He had to be both bulldog and underdog. Soft of voice and sad of eye, he played the part brilliantly. Pausing before he answered questions, drawing on a State Express 555 cigarette and talking in tones of measured reasonableness, he came across as the thinking man’s soldier. Despite his youth, his bulk lent authority, his beard, grown as a symbol of mourning for the massacred Ibos, lent gravitas. Yet he could also be arrogant and authoritarian, ready to adopt the very practices he affected to disdain—by, for instance, appointing his father to chair two regional corporations. http://www.economist.com/node/21540986 |

ojukwu was a great man who fought for what he believed me. those of you who offer govt., ojukwu only started the war cos he refused gowon to rule cos it was not his turn to rule. he told gowon it was not his turn to rule in the military but a man who is at the top. but gowon refused. gowon is the real traitor not ojukwu. i respect ojukwu for fighting for fighting for what he believed in. i love you ojukwu. |

Could anyone be kind enough to explain exactly how our mode of paying respect to the departed should be any business of this rural attention-starved dunce and his idle mind? Why dey pain am say Abiola, Awolowo, Dele Giwa, Funsho Williams and Bola Ige combined no get this kind attention at the time of their direct/indirect extermination at the hands of their own treacherous brothers? Abeg, monkey get levels biko. |
Re: Ojukwu Was A Symbol Of Igbo Unity by Nobody: 1:50pm On Dec 04, 2011 |
Please spare us all the " his people loved him" nonsense. Did Ojukwu love his people?- YES! Did his people love him?- No Lets be objective and remove sentiments. If he was loved, the likes of Edwin Onwudiwe will not join hands with those criminals in If his people love him thesame way he loved them. He would have been the King maker in Igbo politics rather PDP score more votes in eastern Nigeria. If his people loved him, APGA would be running a one party system in Eastern Nigeria. Please spare us the hypocrisy. I admire him for standing up for what is right although I have my reservations on the way he planned, executed and finally concluded his convictions. By Nigerian standards he was a better leader than most of the crop of leaders we have in Nigeria but was betrayed by his people. |
