S/African police invade Nigerian embassy •Siege may lead to diplomatic row between both countries

Written by Stephen Gbadamosi with agency report
Sunday, 04 December 2011

If necessary steps are not taken, a disagreement over visa refusal to some South Africans

in Johannesburg during the week may develop into a major diplomatic row between Nigeria and South Africa.

According to a South African newspaper, Saturday Star, some members of a local church had accused the Nigerian Consulate staff of demanding bribes from them before they could be granted visa to the country.

Although the Nigerian Consulate, according to the visa denial victims, hinged the refusal on its inability to verify that the Twelve Apostles Church in Christ to which the 68 members belonged was duly registered in Nigeria, the South Africans insisted that they were treated so because they did not give bribe.

They were said to be travelling to Nigeria to attend an annual prayer meeting of the church in Nigeria and that they had booked for air tickets and accommodation with a sum of R500, 000. They also claimed that their passports were returned with cancelled visas on them.

According to Saturday Star, a member of the church delegation, Thami Khanyile, said they were bluntly asked to pay the bribe before their visas were issued. She said a consulate official told them that staff had been sweating over 68 visas “for nothing.”

“When we stated that we were not willing to pay a bribe, the officials reacted angrily and proceeded to revoke the visas which had already been issued on our passports. They told us that the Nigerian church which we were visiting did not provide them with a genuine certificate that our church was registered. We saw this as a ploy to try and solicit bribe from us.

“We called the police to come to our rescue because they refused to hand our passports back.

“We wanted to open a case, but we were advised to take this through international relations,” Khanyile was quoted to have said.

However, reports had it that the arrival of heavily armed policemen from Bramley police station was to aggravate the drama as upon being denied access by consular officials, they attempted force entry and tried to scale the electric fence. The local newspaper also published CCTV camera pictures of the policemen arguing with security staff and officials of the embassy in their bid to gain entry into the premises.

Sources at the consular were quoted to have said the church members had tried to stage an “illegal sit in” at the consulate after they were told to return the next day with additional documents.

“Police ordered the guard on duty to open the gate and when he refused, they threatened to gain entry by force,” the source was quoted.

Another source was quoted: “They acted in violation of diplomatic protocols and will have to answer serious questions for invading Nigeria.”

However, the local paper reported that the spokesman for the Department of International Relations, Clayson Monyela, commented that the department would raise the issues through diplomatic channels with its counterpart.

Also, the spokesperson of the South African Police (SAPS), Captain Dennis Adriao, was quoted as saying that the organisation would investigate, “once official complaint” was received, adding that “the SAPS respects international diplomatic protocols and any violation of these protocols will be seen in serious light.”

A diplomatic storm is brewing after police allegedly tried to storm the Consulate General of Nigeria in Johannesburg this week.

The drama played out on Tuesday when 68 members of Twelve Apostles Church in Christ who were to travel to Nigeria on Wednesday demanded their passports back after being denied visas over claims they “refused to pay a bribe”.

They had wanted to attend an annual prayer meeting in Nigeria.

Heavily armed police from Bramley police station arrived and, denied access by consular officials, allegedly tried to storm the gate before attempting to scale the electric fence. CCTV shows armed officers arguing with security guards and embassy officials while trying to get on to the consular premises.

Church members were handed their passports with cancelled visas.

Thami Khanyile of the church said they were told “bluntly” by an official that staff had been sweating over 68 visas for “nothing”.

“When we stated that we were not willing to pay a bribe, the officials reacted angrily and proceeded to revoke the visas which had already been issued in our passports,” he said. “We called the police to come to our rescue because they refused to hand our passports back. We wanted to open a case but we were advised to take this through international relations.”

Khanyile said the church has lost more than R500m in booked air tickets and accommodation for the 68.

“They (consular officials) told us that the Nigerian church which we were visiting did not provide them with a genuine certificate that our church was registered,” he added. “We saw this as a ploy to try and solicit a bribe from us.”

Consular sources said the church members had tried to stage an “illegal sit-in” at the consulate after they were told to return the next day with extra documents.

Security was called to forcibly remove them, but police arrived and tried to force their way in.

“They ordered the guard on duty to open the gate and when he refused they threatened to gain entry by force,” said a source.

A consular official who cannot be named said the officers acted “in violation of the diplomatic protocol and will have to answer serious questions for invading Nigeria”.

Clayson Monyela, spokesman for the Department of International Relations and Co-operation, said the department would raise the issues through diplomatic channels with their Nigerian counterparts.

The SAPS would investigate once an official complaint was received, said national police spokesperson Captain Dennis Adriao. The SAPS “respects international diplomatic protocols and any violation of these protocols will be seen in a serious light”. - Saturday Star

SA cops stormed Nigerian consulate gate, tried to climb electronic fence in bribery-row

You better stop now before South African government will tell the whole world how the Nigerian government sought their support to intimidate John Okah over nothing. Or do you also want the SA to tell you how long they have been getting reports of corrupt practices from the Naija Console.

It was wrong for South African Police to do this. But we also know that the Nigerian officials must have asked for bribe as USUAL. Our country needs cleansing!!! Or we will awaits bigger mess because the center will never hold with this level of corruption and irresponsibility.

So because somebody alleged that visa denial was because of bribe, it means he must be right and he is above making false accusation?

He said that visa had already been pasted on their passport but was cancelled by the official in annoyance because no bribe was given. Is that possible?

No embassy allows you to peruse your processed visa on its premises, you have to go out first. So how did the passports get back to the embassy officials for them to cancel the initial 'valid visa' and even seize the passports? And if the passports had not been handed over to the applicants, How did they know the decision of the embassy?

The police that wanted to forcefully enter, were they going to arrest diplomats or forcefully retrieve the passports?

All the time SA had been denying Nigerian visas, why have we not been alleging bribery?

lol, honestly it's Nigerians that will suffer as a result of this regardless of whether Nigeria or South Africa is at fault. All South Africans have to do is stop diplomatic ties with Nigeria and close Nigerian embassy. Nigeria can do likewise also, but I don't see South Africans rushing to Nigeria to live there, it's mostly the opposite that occur, so abeg Nigeria, don't screw this up o.

Woe betide you for pointing your left finger at your father land and your place of abode is a dump, now coming to this issue I would like to also see how its going to play out some nigerians have brought down the intergrity of nigeria to the point where common police officers rankless would want to scale an embassy fence illegal entry into nigeria, by force well the likes of james ibori, okah, peter ololo odilli have brought us to this disripute steal and save their and when they are caught they are left of the hook by the law nigerians can't easily get visa's into S.A if you don't tender all the necessary documentation so why shoyld they be given visa's with all their documentation just because the paid 500,000 rand are they investors I have always said this nigerian civil servants are extremely corrupt they also shame nigeria they always bit more then they can chew and have to support them selves by proceeds from corruption check them out they would be trying to own properties in S.A under illegal names paying mortgages through corrupt tendencies we have to lay of the whole civil servants in nigeria and probe all the permanent secretaries, directors and deputy directors we also have to probe all assistant directors of finance, CPO's infact all of them especially the federal auditors

I can bet my last cent those punks were not f*cking church people, for all we know they could be one of the several batches of south africans coming to take Nigerian telecoms, private security, aviation, banking, hospitality etc etc jobs

BTW that $1k repatriation fee the SA consulate in Nigeria compels Nigerians to pay,is it legal
Oh how I wish the foreign affairs minister is as heads-upped as that of aviation, sparks would be flying already and SA govt officials would have to apologise and sanction those their over zealous and ignorant cops who need some schoolling on international protocol
