President Goodluck Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has called on state governments to re-introduce free feeding for primary school pupils to increase school enrolment.

Jonathan, who spoke in Kano State, while inaugurating the re-introduction of free feeding for primary pupils by the state government Thursday, noted that the scheme would lessen the burden on less privileged parents.
The President, who was represented by the Minister of State for Education, Mr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, declared that the Federal Government would support any state that sponsors free feeding for primary school pupils.

He said: “We are optimistic that we would make meaningful progress towards attaining Education for All by 2015. That is why we are determined to work with any state government which shows commitment to schemes that will increase school enrolment. I encourage other state governments to emulate Kano State Government by setting aside funds to feed primary school pupils and attract these less privileged children to school.”

He added that a strong basic education sector would help eradicate poverty, insecurity and other social challenges confronting the nation. Wike, however, inaugurated the scheme by dishing out a meal of jollof rice, fried fish and vegetable to three selected pupils.

In his address, Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso said the free feeding for primary school pupils was first introduced during his first coming as governor between 1999 and 2003.

He said the scheme was stopped by his successor, but he resolved to re-introduce it because of the relevance of the programme to the down-trodden.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, represented by Farouk Lawan, House Committee chairman on Education assured Kano State of the support of National Assembly to achieve a better basic education sector. The inauguration attracted hundreds of pupils from different schools in the state.

Free feeding to bring the hoards to school before or after spending time ensuring school will not become some giant cafeteria for any kid who wants a full stomach or a free meal?

Free feeding eh? So this means that Rochas' N100 payment to pupils in Imo is now a laudable deed?

He is talking rubbish! Why can’t FG introduce free feeding for all pupils in Primary school?
Re: GEJ Challenges State Govts On Free Feeding For Pupils by Kx: 9:32am On Dec 09, 2011
They "copied and pasted" ROCHAS initiative without giving the guy some cool credits.
Will this gov ever "originate" any good idea of their own at all?

Chai! Are we this hungry or just trying to emulate the West? I though the idea behind free food in Western schools was to help kids whose parents were too busy to prepare it for them and also for weight control. This one we are doing is making us look like hungry people. Maybe if unemployment is tackled, the parents wouldn’t be so “less privileged” and food problem might be reduced. I no sabi o! I just dey imagine sha.

why not free feeding for the entire Nigerians? must every thing be free in this country? I think since we're always expecting free things from government, that's why we couldn't stand up and fight them. Let's start paying for what we need and fight any fool that will embezzle such money.

Na wao! It's obvious, a cockroach has never lived without blame in the midst of fowl. I suggest, it's high time we moved forward and laid our swords down. If we must criticise, let it be constructive. Enough of these hatred. We should understand that, we are not helping the image of this country abroad.

This is a very un warranted outburst. I checked your location and found out you are one of those who stay outside the country and talk to gain attention.

the only good i see in this is that it might encourage children in the north to go to school rather than become suicide bombers. but i do not think this is a smart utilisation of 'meagre' resources. whether those children eat in school or not, they will emerge as the same. however if they study in good classrooms instead of under trees, they'll more likely become better in life!

Very laudable and commendable, I am sure this will attract more students to school, ensure basic education, healthy development and a better adult life.It will be commendable to introduce it nationwide, you will be surprised how many people cannot afford daily food, food at school will at least provide some basic nutrition. God bless initiatives like this that help the common Nigerians.
I wouldn't mind the removal of oil subsidy if many of the benefits goes back to the masses instead of a few tens.

Disgraceful.

This is about the most foolish comment from the winshes.
Dude, it is not the FG's duty to provide education; that duty belongs to your state and your LG. The fact that the FG has decided to help the Kano State govt to fund its feeding programme and promised to help any other state should be taken as what it is, an act of benevolence. The FG does not owe the states the welfare of their students, in fact it takes a very rare degree of ignorance to think otherwise.

What will we ask the FG to do next, pay workers in the states? What do you think is the job of your governor and the job of your LG boss?

Please people, if you are ignorant of your rights and the things your state should do for you; get a bloody education before you open your mouths in public.
Re: GEJ Challenges State Govts On Free Feeding For Pupils by Beaf: 2:18pm On Dec 09, 2011
In a developing country like ours, everything should be done to get our kids into school. If it is helping states with free meals, then so be it.
Very laudable move from GEJ.
Re: GEJ Challenges State Govts On Free Feeding For Pupils by Nobody: 4:41pm On Dec 09, 2011
It looks like the Nigerian government does not understand the role of government and the role of parents. If the government begins to feed kids, then where are the parents and what is their role? angry Is this program sustainable? Won't a time come when the same FG will begin to complain that trillions are being spent to feed the children of Nigeria? And trust Nigerians to begin to rain curses on the same government for wanting to take away food subsidy saying: "after all we have oil and that the government only exists for the welfare of Nigerians and this includes feeding their children"

Nigerians and their free everything mentality. What then is their own responsibility? For themselves and their (too many) children? Nonsense! angry
