[color=#006600]Weather you like it or not someone has to pay for it. We all complain there is no roads, no waters, no schools but at the same time no one wants to pay for them. Thats why Lagos and other cities are doing these ppp projects around the states because your taxes alone can not carry out these projects. Like I said before it cost the same to build a road in nigeria as it does abroad, it cost the same to build a hospital in nigeria as it does abroad, it should  cost the same to run a school in nigeria as it does abroad. The average citizen in the UK pays about 20-25% of their salary towards taxes while the average Nigerian will be lucky to even pay tax. Like I said before, either way if you want it and want to maintain it, you got to pay for it some how, either through taxes or fees [tolls]

This does not make sense, sorry.
One of the major 'achievements' being touted by the Fashola/Tinubu administration was the massive increase/improvement of the IGR and tax money by aggressive Government driven schemes. So it stands to reason that the bulk of the people living in Lekki pay their taxes.

By all means, let LCC put toll gates on the stretch of new road they laid down to recoup their expenses. What people are rightly incensed about is the imposition of tolls on the existing Jakande-built road which was merely rehabilitated. Abeg tell me which level of rehabilitation will lead to an agreement to collect monetary payment from that road for the next 25 years?

There are no universities in Lekki, 24 hrs power supply is not the norm there, most roads are bereft of pipe borne water and insecurity is an everyday fact of life. Is Fashola saying that the taxes these people pay cannot cover the few billion naira that was expended to repair the existing road?

What was the officially quoted amount for the cosmetic repairs on the existing road built by Jakande?
Re: Fashola Pleads With Residents On Toll And Further Explains by hercules07: 12:02pm On Dec 19, 2011
Apparently Texas has not gone on that road, there is nothing like cosmetic repairs, the road was well repaired, for goodness sakes, the Lagos - Ibadan expressway is going to cost twice per kilometer and no one is protesting, the airport road is tolled, if you like pass the place 20 times, you will pay 20 times, why is there no protest, abeg let the rich pay, let the poor take BRT.
Re: Fashola Pleads With Residents On Toll And Further Explains by POTUT(m): 12:03pm On Dec 19, 2011
This is a multi-dimensional issue. The governor has cleverly explained the position of the State from a narrow, biased position and people who do not understand will surely become gullible just by reading his comments.

The issue at the CORE is this:
There are 3 proposed toll gates on a 20 kilometer residential stretch of the 49 kilometer road. People like me are protesting the 3 tolls, not really the commencement of the tolling on the first one.

Fashola has come to explain the tolling only, not the justification for 3 tolls. He also explained it from a sympathetic point of view that change has come and we should embrace it, but he is not explaining if that change is evil or for good. It is surely evil to toll the only road to a residential area. I continue to insist that LCC should have built two additional lanes (perhaps on overpasses/flyovers) and then tolled those additional lanes instead of just adding one lane to the existing road, building multiple, oversized roundabouts (that end up narrowing 3 lanes to 2 where they exist) and then tolling everything.

What I was saying is most nigerian states, like Lagos, are broke, its that simple. Yes, Lagos increased its IGR but its budget is still small at about 2-3 Billion USD and a population of 10 million plus. At the same time you have LGAs and small towns of 100,000 in the west that have the same 2-3 Billion USD budget, you just cant compare. How can a state operate on a budget meant for a LGA. Almost every thing LSG does involves ppp because thats the only way they can maximize their budget. Second thing People have to realize is that your state taxes goes to the state and not your area. Even if you pay more through progression taxes your taxes will go to all state projects. Its your LGAs taxes that goes to your area and its your civic responsibility to pay all your taxes fed, state and local.

I'm neither for nor against the tolls but what I'm against are the 3 toll gates being so close together.

Who said the alternative road is FREE? There are Oniru/Elegushi touts with their toll there.
Nigeria is finished. Imagine Fashola saying development is people paying endlessly for road the govt is supposed to provide.

Some one please help me tell Fashola NOT to end his once vibrant political career this way. Mark my word. His career ends here!

His calculations would have been to amass enough illegal wealth before end of tenure for ventures such as acquiring AIRLINERS just like Tinubu did with Bellville Airlines.

What a shame!!!
Re: Fashola Pleads With Residents On Toll And Further Explains by DeepSoul(f): 1:40pm On Dec 19, 2011
People still do not get the grave implications of this.

For people who have to pass all three tolling gates, they'll have to pay THRICE X 2 (exit and entry)

So per day:

6 x N120 = N720
7 days x N720 = 5,040
4 weeks X N5,040 = 20,160
12 months X 20,160 = 241,920

Why should people be subjected to paying SO MUCH! The amount per year is even more than some people's house rent.

We haven't even factored the cost of fuel (subsidized or unsubsidized), cost of maintaining vehicles etc.

In a country where the minimum wage is N18,000, how can a civil servant spend N20,160 every month paying toll fees?

And the most annoying part is that the so-called alternative routes are almost non-existent! There is no reliable form of transportation that will enable people to drop their cars at home and take the bus!!!

This is just inhumane sha! Haba!

These days, good things do not come for FREE

As long as the roads would be continually properly maintained, I have no issue with the fees.

Tolling in itself is not a bad thing.
But people on the mainland should think about this: Imagine if the old toll gates on Lagos-Ibadan expressway started from Ogudu, rather than the Isheri-Magodo axis. Also imagine having 3 toll gates between Greater Lagos and Shagamu.

As for 'high quality roads', maybe people are too young to remember the Lagos-Ibadan expressway when it was originally built. There's nothing high-quality in what LCC has done. Also, we are in a democratic setting. Even the military did not seek to extort the people like Tinubu and Fashola are doing.

Fresh facts have emerged why Lagos lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa is at war with Lagos State Government under the guise of opposing the proposed tolling of Eti Osa-Lekki-Epe Expressway. Among the reasons are the following:
Adegboruwa was compelled by the Lagos State Government to register his office located on the 6th Floor, NIPOST Building, Lagos for the P.A.Y.E. Tax Scheme on September 18, 2008. Prior to this, it may interest you to know that Barrister Adegboruwa had no record of tax payment before 2008.

So, in 2009, he was given a Tax Assessment of N885,000 out of which he cleverly paid N449,500 thinking he could beat the system. On November 17, 2011, he was issued a Non-Compliance Notice in respect of Personal Income Tax by the Lagos Inland Revenue Service.

Those thinking that Adegboruwa is fighting for the masses can see the naked truth.

Barrister Adegboruwa, the self-acclaimed ‘’Advocate of the Masses’’ owns a mansion on No. 1, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa Close, Adegboruwa Junction, Itedo Road, Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase 1.

But that is not the news. Our noise-making, principled legal practitioner did not obtain any Street Naming Permit, neither a Building Approval. LASG has asked him to regularise his documents, but he is going about fighting an unjust war over tolling.

For a man who has neither a Building Approval as prescribed by law nor pay taxes so that government can provide more social infrastructure, Adegboruwa recently registered two new cars (Honda and Nissan Capster) with customised Premium Number Plates branded, JOY.

Though we are nearing the end of the 2011 fiscal year, a Tax Assessment of the sum of N2,112, 583.20 has been raised against this so called social crusader by LIRS. A Letter of Intent to prosecute him for tax default has been served.

Therefore, his agitations are all meant to whip up sentiment when his trial begins. He is cleverly trying to create the impression of ‘’persecution’’ by the state for standing up to fight in defence of the masses. But Lagosians are wiser. Barrister Adegboruwa is a tax evader. Period!
Re: Fashola Pleads With Residents On Toll And Further Explains by hercules07: 3:45pm On Dec 19, 2011
See people who gladly handover 10% or more of their tithes to their pastors complaining about spending money on development, if the toll money is too much please go by BRT, I am sure tolling will help reduce the number of cars plying the roads, we should embrace public transport jare.

The sums don't add up - if BRF paid LCC 4billion for the period the SINGLE toll gate was not in operation, a simple calculation of 4bn x 25 years = 100 billion naira.

If each toll gate is supposed to generate 4bn per year, that equates to 300 billion naira over 25 years?

Something is seriously fishy here - even if the road costs a ridiculous 50bn, then the toll at a rate of 4bn a year should not last more than 15 years at the most for ONE toll gate.

Guys, I am sure you must have at one time or the other passed through the railway crossing from Mushin-Olosa to access Ikorodu road, there is a toll gate- mini Lekki concessionaire (a serving house of rep member owns this). This has been on for God knows how long and nobody has ever complained. Lagosian nay Nigerians will never go back to the type of protest we had during the June 12. Like someone said; as long as he can afford it, what the HELL is the demonstration for because police regualrly extort drivers without anything returned. He is ok with a good stretch of road that the concessionarie is tolling for.

That railway crosso-over is between Ogunmokun Street in Olosha and Kayode Street in Onipanu.
Rumours had it that a serving Senator GOS(Senator Ganiyu Solomon ) owns the toll-gate.
There were initial protest by the property owners in that area because some houses were demoilished but folks relaxed because of the mutual benefit of the toll.Contrary to Lekki toll, the railway toll is smaller and as such is much cheaper.
